Hi all,

A lot has been discussed on these boards about 4K workflow, but I'm interested in hearing from those folks who are working exclusively (or primarily) in 2K since doing so has its own issues.

The main issue I see is that when working in 2K, unlike when you shoot in 4K, your best working proxy is file ("_H") is NOT HD quality. It's 1024 x 576.

So, while you can edit with this, it's going to be offline quality only. Red promises that we'll soon be able to edit with the "_F" (full size) proxy, but until then....

What are you doing to get the footage into FCP at the best resolution possible?

What are you doing to master the footage out of FCP?

Thanks!

Thanks, K, I'm aware of Crimson. But I'm asking for real-world experiences here.

I'd rather not work with lower than HD resolution clips, so I'll ask again:

What are those working in 2K doing to get the footage into FCP at the best resolution possible?

What are you doing to master the footage out of FCP?

(aside from, of course, Crimson Workflow)

Kowboy, I have two questions about that:

Are you transcoding using Red Alert!, RedCine, or Compressor?

How are you monitoring the 2K footage with the Kona?

Honestly Crimson is the way to go if your crunched for time, Anything else will take preparation before you Edit, IF you Transcode everything to UC unless your working off a Raid you cant play back realtime, You can then transcode to DV or DVCpro 1080 from the 2k UC. Crimson also will reconnect media from Transcoded Proxies to the original R3d. So if you batch the _H proxy through compressor that will give you the fastest offline format to work with outside proxies.

For a real world solution, Crimson is the answer allowing slower Intel macs the chance to EDit with the proxies, online through Crimson then Grade after youve roundtripped the xml back into FCP, so you can use Kona 3 for video output at 2k UC.
