25p r3d for filmout?

I will grading one RED footage for filmout which shot as 25p(big mistake) ,so I must change the 25p r3d to 24p dpx before send them to film lab.

I try to create a new project which set the Timecode calculated at 24p,then i add material into medie pool based on EDL of 25p founded in FCP, render to 24p dpx as target after grading .

I am not sure this plan will going,so if anyone have some good idea about this question.


by the way,i have something confusing abuot the Red setting

1，Which colorspace and gamma curve should use for filmout?

2，Shall i use the LUT? and which？ Or take my monitor(SONY BVM-D24E) match the one in film lab without LUT.

3，Which Colorspace conversion ?normally scaled legal or unscaled full range dat.

I'd go through Cinema Tools. Just make the project run 4% slower. The issue will be the speed remap on the audio but that's WAY less complex than frame remaps. Same as we have to do with 24p projects going to PAL only backwards. Cinema Tools is the answer.

Seems like a film out is going to be done frame for frame anyway, do DPX out from 25fps should not be an issue as the film itself will play back at 24fps when projected. More importantly, adjusting sound for the 4% slow down and consideration for pitch adjustment.

I would have a conversation with the lab doing the print and get a LUT from them. That will ensure an a fairly accurate transfer. Would be best though to do a test with the lab to ensure the consistency from start to finish if possible. As for the RED metadata you can use REDCOLOR 2 and REDLOGFILM, and use the Labs LUT for your your monitors. That said you need to probe your monitors to generate a reference.

I've done that route many times. The sound guy should worry about the 25/24p slow donwn in pitch and synch.

Don't cut frames. Adjust audio.

Film recording is a frame by frame job so no need to adjust image... just fix the audio by a pitch of 4%. Before you do the pitch have in your timeline a start and an end beep leader and check the sync. Then do the export for the sound lab and from the same timeline send image for grading.

The RED has nothing to do with the monitor calibration and viewing conditions for film out.

Your monitor if its feed by Dual Link HD-SDI is the best viewing device available on earth... the best performance on blacks. It needs though, a calibration and custom LUT's specific for your monitor to get an accurate film out.

If you have the above then use REDfilm and Log workflow to do the grading and use the custom LUT on your calibrated monitor in total darkness.
