  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

250 ISO Looks great.

WELCOME TO 250 ISO land :) It's special.

Now, happy to hear that the big leap forward and the promised land is a 250 iso camera... And we are left hoping for UK sunny weather for outside shoots ? With due respect, some of you guys look odd at times... We all like red, and we must all stand a certain amount of disappointment. I fully understand the point here, I love this image of the dragon as well, and I am happy that people working in controlled lighting environment may have found the sweet spot of Dragon, but I still remember "2000 iso is the future 800 iso", and I remember some previous picture of a dragon, too. I do not mean to spoil the party, at all. I just think that this kind of party over a rather minimum iso performance may not help, and makes dissenting voices necessary. Yet, the image here is stunning...

Denis, no worries. Swappable OLPFs are on the horizon, with THREE OLPS to choose from:

1) LOWLIGHT (where 2000 ISO is the new 800)
2) NEW OLPF (current OLPF with superb highlight DR)
3) GOLDILOCKS (the new middle OLPF that should land somewhere inbetween previous two)

Ok ! Be sure I hope that I shall end up wrong all the way, and that I shall regret skipping the upgrade to Dragon (after testing by myself) for now. In that event, I shall be all too happy to write it here, and that at least will not be suspectedly coming from a blind fan.

One may still wonder why Red sensors need calibration, 3 swappable olpf, when other (great) cameras do not seem to bother so much. A counterpart of stunning performances ? Possibly. Or a consequence of technical choices. I truly do not know. I am not familiar with stage use, but I simply know that it will not make epic dragon the easiest camera to use in the field. Nor a very versatile one (stage + efp/eng).

Bottom line, we should be cautious not to get laughed at. And not forget that those wo read this board may not like red as much as we do, and that people at red who read this board presumably like red even more than we do (no offence meant) :-) None of these particular audiences should be led to think that we are fully happy at what may at times remind the old joke about Microsoft (and hopefully will never deserve it) : "it's not a bug, it's a feature".

Again, Red has been through harder times and will prove me wrong, especially if this forum continues helping for that.

I used to shoot 35mm a few years ago.

I feel spoiled by how easy the RED EPIC MX or the RED DRAGON are to use. In the field and in post.
Once you go through the entire process of shooting/finishing 35mm, using RED cameras is a breeze.

I'd much rather click an extra box in my software at home drinking coffee than go all the way to the film lab and deal with everything there (spending a lot of time and paying a lot of money). For results which are getting more and more indistinguishable from each other as we move along and the cameras evolve.

Perspective, I guess.

That's all a great idea, as long as they fix the magenta flares on the low light one.

hi again everyone! after a bit of tinkering, i think i have gotten my head around the basics of the RED color science. when exposed at a low iso, the file is quite malleable.

heres an r3d for reference.

now, if i could only export a file for vimeo from redcine-x that looks anything close to this! any help is appreciated. thanks!
