I want to ask a quick question before I do some tests tomorrow.
Will there be a difference if I shoot some action sport in 50 fps using a 50 fps time base or shoot 50 fps in a 25 fps time base and speed it up in post to get "realtime"?

Will I run into a lot of problems in post if I decide to use a 50fps timeline ?

There's little point in using a 50fps timeline unless your final output will be at 50fps.

Why do you want to shoot 50fps? If it's not for slow motion, then guessing you want the smoother motion rendition. If so, then the second approach of speeding up in post in a 25fps timebase would be the more conventional way to go.

25 time base and 50 time base will require 2 different timelines in editing, which may be a problem. But the actual look of motion of 50fps in 25 time base and 50fps in 50 time base will be the same (if resolution and shutter is the same).
If shooting sports in PAL country, I would advice shooting 25 time base with desired fps.

If you decide to shoot 50 fps you need to use 360 shutter to make it look like 25 fps when you deal away half the frame to get into regular 25p palyback. Then you can if wanted use the material also in it's full length showing all the frames i.e half speed slomo... if thats what you are looking for.

Hi
Thanks for all the replies.
Yes, it is to get the smoother motion rendition (specially for some free style motor cross). I will probably go for 25fps timeline then, specially since the project will involve other type of footage as interviews etc. it's meant for broadcast, but we are hoping to release a shorter version of the project as a (shortrun) theatrical and after seeing HFR for the first time at our local cinema I thought that would lend it self really well to this project (it won't be 3D though)

High action sports is a perfect scene for HFR! I would defenitly go for 50 fps timebase and a 50 fps timeline! 180 degree shutter even...! :-)
