  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

2010 World Cup Thread

Good thing too. The Dutch were a disgrace to football. They should be ashamed.

You couldn't be more wrong! I guess you only watched the final. What was a disgrace was De Jong's foul... and the ref not giving a red card for that was almost as disgraceful. Several of the other fouls were horrible too. However, Netherlands were not a disgrace, you can't forget all the other wonderful football that got them to the final. Some of the most beautiful goals too. Beautiful football from Netherlands, as always, just not enough of it in this game, and yes, I agree that they played nasty in this game. Spain played a much cleaner game.

Could you believe the among of yellows? As many as the members of either team, plus the three subs!

An other thing that was hard to believe were how bad the players didn't want to score! :) Three clear chances that would have been pretty easy with a chip, a few more with any sort of decent finish, but the stakes couldn't be higher for either nation with so much gosh darn foreplay with no cup to release all that tension... Oh, to be in Barcelona right now, what a party we are missing. ;.(

Bottom line, Spain played a better final than Netherlands.

Felicitaciones España! Campeon Mundial 2010!

BTW, what do you guys think about Forlan's golden ball? I think it was very well deserved.

Muller gets the golden boot with a narrow 2 assist edge on three players, Forlan, Villa and Sneijder.

Overall, good world cup -minus the stupid ball :)! Too bad we have to wait 4 years for the next one.

Haha...
You couldn't be more wrong! I guess you only watched the final
I'm talking about the final, not the other 63 matches.

There was only one team trying to play football tonight which ruined it as a spectacle. I thought Van Bommell and Robben were particularly cynical.

Anyway, having just got back from Johannesburg and witnessed the very positive impact the world cup is having on the whole of Africa, I think the tournament has been superb in terms of stadiums, organisation, atmosphere, legacy and all the other stuff Fifa like to go on about, it just fell short (a long way short) on quality football.

Hey ho, congrats to Spain, roll on Brazil:)

I thought Uruguay, Chile, Argentina, Netherlands, and many many more teams were fun to watch. Lots of games locked up, but there were lots of attack minded and open games too!

I didn't go to SA, but it really feels like it was a great tournament. The ball was a major blunder, and the grass could have been planted sooner so it didn't come off giving us lunar surface towards the end... but the stadiums were beautiful, and the people of South Africa (minus the vuvuzelas) were an immense joy to watch. Seeing Mandela made me emotional. Hope it isn't too long before Africa gets to host their second.

Brazil 2014 will be a major party! Big favorites with home advantage and 180 million trying to score a ticket, but several teams promise to arrive with strong squads, especially Germany and Argentina! Maybe we can give them a run for their money. :)

That was a much better game than I feared. The Spanish weren't allowed to play at their pace, thank goodness. De Jong was disgraceful, that's almost as disgraceful as Busquets dramatics in the Inter match. Should have been sent off. The Spanish were diving all over the place following minimal contact, if any, and subsequently surrounding the ref. Heck, they would appeal for yellow cards (simulation) after clearly fouling themselves, haha. I don't think it was a particularly rough game (nowhere near Battle of Nuremberg, another Dutch vs Iberian 1-0 Iberian win), and Van Bommel proved he can control himself following a yellow card. The Spanish just made every touch look like murder attempts. Dutch should have been prepared for that. Sure, Robben goes down a lot, but he's also kicked down hard, a lot. Superb stuff by the Spanish to three-up on him and close him out of the right flank. Sneijder was the best player on the pitch, by far. He made two goal-saving tackles in front of Stekelenburg, constantly pressuring high up the pitch forcing Pique/Puyol to play balls back to Iker, his distribution was just about perfect, incredible thru-balls out of nowhere. Especially that one. Dutch were the better side in the second half. Poor Robben, I could hardly believe he missed a comfortable one-on-one. I was sure he was going to either dink it, or go round the keeper. You don't deserve to win missing such chances. The decisive moment was of course the Puyol incident. Clearly a sending off. Following that, you had to wonder if the Dutch ran out of luck and I had a sneaky feeling Iniesta would sneak up for a late, late goal. At least they deserved to win, based on Extra Time, unlike the Chelsea game, which they should have clearly lost 4-0. But of course, no one remembers such moments. It will always be remembered as an Iniesta winning Spanish champions. No one will replay his dives. The Van der Wiel booking was perhaps the worst dive I have seen.

Also, winning a World Cup scoring 8 goals in 7 matches. Amazing.

The initial cross for the goal looked offside to me. The goalkick decision immediately preceding it was awful. There wasn't a Dutch player anywhere near the wall! It is these little things, these little things...

I hope Sneijder wins the Ballon d'Or. He deserves it. Forlan is Golden Ball. Well deserved. Why was Suarez not nominated? He single handedly took Uruguay through the R16 and quarters!

What about Muller? 6 matches, 5 goals, 3 assists, and just the heartbeat of the German side. Oh, 20 years old. He'll be awarded the Golden Shoe (it should be shared, really). Why exactly was he not nominated for the Golden Ball? Or are youngsters not eligible? Embarrassing for FIFA. I look forward to see this German side in the coming years. Finally, his yellow card in the Argentina game. Poor, poor decision. If at all, Messi's control was more of a handball. Surely, surely, one of the pivotal moments of the world cup. Finally, so much for tick-tock/reverse catenaccio/possession football whatever you call it, Spain have only grounded their way through their last three matches either from the setpieces, or counter-attacks. Either games could go either way. It is these little things - Cardozo missing a penalty that should be retaken, a goal that should have stood, Ramos clearly tripping Ozil not given as a penalty, same with Puyol, etc. etc. Lucky champions.

What does one game have to do with the other? And regardless, acting is bad, but kicking someone this hard with cleats is not worse?!

Maybe you need to watch it again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBa15Q7QCjY

And also, keep in mind that it is De Jong's action that I called disgraceful... not the way the rest of the team played, though the game could have been a lot cleaner.

World Cup

Next time England. :-)

Our plan includes dropping that stupid warm-up-kit-with-little-numbers-on-the-front that the players seem to have mentally forgotten to take off before the games started, and go back to playing in a proper England kit. For the record that's plain white shirts with blue shorts (or plain red shirts with white shorts for when we play Germany or Argentina).

Then we are going to give those shirts to 11 players who are not "burned out" from playing in the Premier League, and instruct them to pass the ball in the direction of the other team's goal rather than our own. And yes, oven-mitten gloves and padded shorts will be banned for the goalkeeper. As usual, once England go out - to either Germany or Argentina we can already confidently predict - it will become easier to appreciate the merits of the other teams.

Of this year's semi-finalists, Holland looked very well balanced, Germany were great on the counter attack, Spain showed really intricate one-touch passing. But special mention to Uruguay. Although lucky to get passed Ghana, and any country deserves credit for getting to the World Cup semi's, that's especially so when your population is less than 4 million.
