Considering we are a day out from a most EPIC Red event, I thought it would be fun to hear everyone's predictions for what we might see. Not what we want, but what we will see.

Whoever comes the closest with their prediction of what will constitute both Epic and Scarlet (and/or DSMC) wins the bragging rights of being able to read Jim's mind. You will revered as a guru among us. Some will call you a seer. Others, hope. In the future, we will look to you to predict the inner workings of the man we call Jannard. (Okay some of you call him Jim, but Jannard sounds more dramatic.)

Jarred and the rest of the RED team, you are not allowed to play. Hopefully you will be too busy tonight to move this to the Off Topic thread.

Note to readers: THIS IS SPECULATION ONLY.

So have at it...

1st post ever

Occurred to me that they might be doing something revolutionary in a non-technical realm. Perhaps a lend/lease program. Perhaps hosting a workflow infrastructure that's web accessible.

Or on the technical side making the Scarlet more modular, like Red 1, further lowering the price point for the body only.

I can't see the Scarlet moving up, since the Red's already there. Perhaps sideways ...

Not concerned with the Epic, not even close to my price range.

What I believe is that SCARLET/DSMC/RED ONE/EPIC will become one singular modular system. You will be able to add features at will, based on what you can pay. You will be able to add onto the system, or break down the same system into a SCARLET or RED ONE or EPIC configuration. (All versions will be DSMC enabled). So your EPIC can be broken down to a portable, lightening fast SCARLET configuration, and if you own a SCARLET, you can eventually build it into an EPIC. RED ONE program will be folded into this....go light, go heavy.

So we are all owning the same camera, differently enabled, at customizable price points. This will truly put the final nail in the crippleware coffin.

Included will be a universal lens mount, 12 completely noise-free stops of latitude, the previously announced 100 mbps data rate.

Snap-tite, Build-a-Bear, Tinker toy - it will be able to be all things to all people, no more arguing over who has the "better" camera, it will just be as good as you can afford to make it, totally egalitarian....

The beauty will be that RED will not have to build more cameras, they will just build one base camera, endlessly upgradeable.

I just hope Scarlet will be affordable for me.

I second that, I do think that given Red's history, we will all be amazed at what is announced in just a few more hours. Cant Wait!!!

I suspect

I suspect

I suspect a brush rather than a tool!

I suspect it will be the democratization of visual creativity!

And finally it will bring peace on earth!!

Not sure about the last one but here's hoping! :w00t:

1. Interchangeable lenses
2. Micro 4/3 Mysterium X Sensor
3. Included Zoom lens and LCD
4. (sold separately) Set of lenses.

This is the only thing I can think of that would make all other companies freak. If anyone else said they could do this (at a reasonable price) I would call it a scam, but maybe RED can do this.

You're a storyteller. :innocent:

Well, I don't know, but what Meryem Ersoz said about the modularity is the right direction, IMHO.

To be able to customize the camera like a computer configuration, according to your needs\budget.

Cause it actually is a computer. A specialized computer for motion picture acquisition.

So in time, you could send the unit for upgrading the processing power - for more fps - or faster storage, or different sensor. Or interchangeabe sensors. One daylight balanced and another for tungsten.

Dreams, dreams... :)

EDIT: BTW, www.Red.com is already lagging... :) ... but maybe it's my connection.

I think the announcement will include additional tools for post production and perhaps expanded partnerships with third party providers.

I'm pulling for 4/3 format too. What a poke in the eye (or lens) that would be for Sony Et Al with their 2/3 video sensors.

Epic will cost same as the Redone !!! Just kidin'

With all the viral marketing buzz I predict a Scarlet fever epidemic of Epic proportions.:)

Meryem, I like the way you think

Given that the minimum amount of accesories to actually use the camera with battery power is roughly $5800 (presuming you have your own lenses already), I'm betting the price will be somewhere in the neighborhood of $4200.

I'm also predicting that a few people will die from "spontaneous exploding head syndrome" tomorrow, starting at about 9:15 AM EST, in a wave across timezones as people wake up and read all about it...

Which if I don't suffer from this, will benefit me greatly as there will be that many less people in line ahead of me for getting one...

Hopefully Epic and Scarlet will incorporate some of the things we have been asking for from the start.

Epic: Better ergonomics.

Scarlet: Interchangeable lenses. Or faster stock lens. Or bigger sensor. It should significantly beat an EX1 in terms of sensor surface area (remember, they have 3 CCDs) & f-stop. They might feel the need to respond to the Ikonoskop camera too. Canon will announce a real upgrade at NAB and they need to try to beat that too.

Both cameras will be designed to work well for 3D acquisition. Eg significantly thinner than the Red One, easy to sync.

As far as DSMC etc etc, I really don't care so am not speculating on this.

I'm far more interested in if they make lens mounts much easier to change or integrate a real IMS-like system.

Oh, and video output should definitely be 1080p. The next gen of small Red LCD panels & viewfinders need to be 1080p because what we have is not sharp enough. Shooting at 5k on an Epic but only being able to see 720p detail is silly. Hope they fix that.

One thing I know for sure: RedCine will still have crippled .xml output, not be able to re-link clips, not have a timeline zoom function, and make you start from scratch with your color grading once you're doing the online. People have been asking for this stuff for months and it's simple to add, but nobody cares.

If Jim were hyping up the next release of RedCine and giving teaser screenshots of new features I'd be far more excited than I am about tomorrow's camera announcements.
