Still looked pretty noisy to me in the area under the red whatsit, more of a soft, noise-reduced noise, but I think it would still be objectionable for anything bigger than SD.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Correct, but I find it a great improvment.

Some more testing, export from REDalert (4k tiff, redlog, camera rgb), 200% crop:

TL: 2000asa, no correction
TR: 2000asa, "neat image"
BL: 320asa, "neat image", exposure boost (aftereffects)
BR: 320asa Nativ .r3d (aftereffects), "neat image", exposure boost

The crop on the bottom right has very little noise even in full 4k. So noise reduction on the native files with "neat image" filter in affter effects seems to give me a very very clean 2000 asa 4k image:)

Is it just me or does the first full frame image appear to have a split effect vertically down the middle with the right hand side being darker ? reminds me of the JVC HDV 100 problem? Is this in the shot ? a sensor or processing artifact ? And what is the red thing the guy wheels in ?
But the footage looks absolutely usable . Nice discovery.

The first frame is split to show you the difference of the filtered and unfiltered image.

sorryabout the split observation, thepurpose is incredibly obvious now that you mention it.

No worries. The JVC split sensor thing was a disaster.

There are other noise reduction plug-in that can really help when you get in a pinch.

I've only tried the AE internal grain reduction filter and Color's noise reduction FX plug , both are ok but not incredible, any other recommendations ? The workflow on this one might be a bit slow .

Am I to understand that all the images were shot with the same lighting, f/ stop and shutter speed? Or is the 320 ASA image exposed more?

Yes, it's the same shot. RED files are 320 asa raw, 2000asa is only a post thing anyway. What I observed, is that if you have noisy footage, you load the native .r3d files into aftereffects and aply the "neat image" filter, then you boost your image to whatever "asa" you wish. What I also observed, is that even dpx and tiff files are not as good as doing image adjustments on the native files in aftereffect (makes sence anyway).

Actually the AE plugin can do pretty neat (pun intended) job.

Goffb, could you post a few frames of the original footage, i'd like to have a go at it in AE just for fun...
