  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1st Scarlet....

It looks beautiful (the footage and that pic of the camera), Tonaci. The 85mm 1.2L is a lovely lens as well. Really nice bokeh.

Tonaci, THANKS a lot !

I have a question and I may not be the only one. This video looks INSANE. Wow ! I have never noticed such a filmic look - even on the EPIC. I can't really explain it - but the 24p feeling is awesome. I repeat, I newer saw something so filmic and organic, besides 35mm. Maybe the motion blur ?

What did you do to the footage ? Did you add some new filmlook effect in RCX or FCPX ?

Just incredible.

Am I the only one here seeing this ?

Great stuff.

at around 0:16 it looks there is some "ghosting" (?) along the edge of the guys cheek. Can anyone else see that? am i going mad?

Hey Andrew,
I don't think there is any ghosting. I am scrubbing back and forth and don't notice anything out of the ordinary..it could be a combination of the pan/motion blur and person in the background moving around.

Also, thanks for the kind words everyone!

Thanks for all the wonderful examples Tonaci! I'm so damn ready for my Scarlet to arrive X)

A little sneak peak of something I am working on.
Shot on Scarlet X + Red Pro 18-85mm Zoom
Will have more info tomorrow. =)

I think that filmic organic look is due in part to the lens he's using. I've seen some really experienced ASC guys mention they think the older Panchros and older lenses in general a nice match for Red Epic (presumably Scarlet) as it tends to tone down some of the unavoidably contrasty images produced digitally. I've noticed this with my AF100. I prefer the natural flaws of my still quite sharp Nikon glass, to the extreme perfect crispness of cine primes I've tried on it. Seems to smooth things out in a natural way. Yes youcan do things in post, but that's not my personal preference.

Thanks a lot Tonaci, the footage looks amazing and so the stills, skin tones, everything, and it's all natural light !

All your footage really helps demonstrate what kind of images we can expect to see coming out of Scarlet, Tonaci. I mainly wanted to see how skin tones would be handled and I'm sold. All this talk about crop factors is no big deal to me. Moving around would solve that problem. I just care about the image quality.

The guy smoking wanted to laugh soo bad.

Yes indeed, it could be the lens. Could also be the compression he's using (8:1) - Maybe ?

I have seen the video a couple of times know and the filmic look I'm talking about is more visible when things move - like the hand or the head - but maybe most when the camera pans.

It's hard to describe, but maybe what I'm seeing and enjoying so much is the motion blur...

Now we are talking Tonaci! Loved the two last images. So nice when the full subjects are in focus. Since dslr I seen alot shooting so shallow dof that they cant keep the full body in focus. This I like alot!

I've been watching the video again. The thing that I like so much is the motion blur. I can't tell the difference with 35mm motion blur. Maybe someone with more trained eyes can, but I can't.

Anyway, Tonaci, you made my day ! :-)

Great sample videos, all three. I am amazed at how well the quality holds up under Vimeo compression too. The quality and character of Scarlet definitely comes through. Nicely done.
