  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1st 24 hours with an Epic

Gunliek,

For the project I'm working on, there will be many color to B&W conversions. That's why I've been holding out for using a Red, b/c I assume that working w/ RAW files gives more options when going from color to black and white. Do you agree that Red footage is especially flexible when converting color to B&W? Be honest :).

Thanks so much!

She's not freezing... :)

I think the RED images are good for B&W, BUT the RCXP lacks a channel mixer.
Ansd a channel mixer is kina essential for good B&W from RGB conversions, methinks.

I found this feature after the 3.0 firmware update, didn't realize I could shoot redLogFilm in camera. Do you have a custom curve you add to make the milky image pop?

And redLogFilm in-camera is just what the doctor ordered. Thanks!!!

Well... That would kinda be counterproductive, wouldn't you say?

RLF is great for that, if you want different looks and have in-monitor LUTs for VFX/director etc, as it is standard cineon.

As a photographer, I WANT that milky look, as that is the closest I can get to see if information is ACTUALLY (not perceivably) exposed out of range. Thus I want the highlights protected and I want to see what details are available in the dark.

I have once - by accident - forgotten that I had RLF turned on, and started to light and shoot for that. That gave me some extremely contrasty and fun images! :)

Actually quite beautifull!

But generally, that is NOT the point of having it turned on...

If you turn on log, it is because you know how to look at a log image, kinda... :)

It's part of a project I am not sure I will do... :)@

Theme is Hidden lust, but the intepretation of that headline is quite wide.

Lust is mostly hidden in one way or another...

Sexually focused images - like commercials and porn, are rarely images of lust, but images created to generate lust...

They're more like pack-shots...

This image is not a prime example for what I am talking about, though. I just happen to like it as an image...

I'm pretty new to the color to B&W conversion, but can't individual channels be boosted or muted by using curves in RCXP? Also, do you think that Resovle has good tools for going from color to B&W? Thanks again!

Color and resolve has good tools for this.

RCXP... Yes... I can see how I could have worked with that, with the 2nd saturation option. Problem is that the rgb gain/degain sliders (and curves) also affects luma beyond the different luma levels in the different channels.

The RGB split function in Color, is one of my most used tools when looking at or trying to teach about how images and different light-types work....

Unfortunately, I don't have access to FCP. I do have Resolve Lite, but haven't spent much time with it yet. If there is any particularly area of Resolve you'd recommend I look into for this type of work, I'm all ears. Thank very much again.

From the Resolve 8.2 manual p251:

Using the RGB Mixer with “To monochrome” turned on gives you the ability to mix your own custom blends of all three color channels to emphasize the creative characteristics you require. For instance, increasing the mix of blue and decreasing red and green can give skin tones a darker, metallic sheen. The following screenshots show multiple versions of the same image with different monochrome mixes.

And this is basically what you are asking about.

It's a real fun tool!

Thanks so much Genleik!

You gotta give it to the guy, he's on it. p251! :)
