  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1st 24 hours with an Epic

Gunliek,
I just realized that I've never taken the time to tell you how much I've appreciated this thread and other posts of yours over the years. I come back to this thread time and time agian as you update it. Thank you for your time, energy and excellence.

Best,
-Matt (a near full Norwegian!)

I saw this thread briefly when you started it ... and then forgot about it until now, when I followed a link you posted on a Scarlet thread.

This is pretty damn great stuff.

Makes me want to go out and shoot some more ... which is just about the best compliment I can give a set of images!

Jealousy: The feeling of loving what you are doing, and hating that I'm not doing it too.

You can make 24 hours last a long time Gunliek. :)

Nice stuff. I hope you are well.

I have been holding back a bit on the comparative images between R1 and Epic, but with the Scarlets out the door and the R1 probably off production (?) and people need to learn to become happy with what is and not what was, it's maybe about time.

I don't wanna create a mess with these comparisons, so if there is good reason to still hold off for a while, I have no problem doing so...

Input appreachiated!

AH....

And thanks for those comments!
Really appreachiated!

Well, if I had a model like that, my photos would look great, too! ;-) When my Scarlet comes, I guess I have to start looking for one of those! :ihih:

Didn't you know that they come with the camera???

You're in for a ride, mate!

Thanks.

I could maybe say a bit about that image...
1st

It is straight out of RCX.

There's some HDRx involved, but I didn't use much of the X-channel...

It's lit with 3 x 650W arri fresnells. One at full focus on her backhead and two as open as they get in from the right. Otherwise, te cellar was pitch dark.
The dynamic range used in the orignal is quite insane.

I did intend to overexpose...

I have really come to love how the Epic has a usefull image all the way "up" and "down", so you don't HAVE TO expose for the sensors sweetspot anymore to get beautifull images.

This camera LOVES dynamics. While other cameras I know really dislike them. Not because of technical and theoretical range, but because the image starts to distort in an ugly way when you move too far from center.

It's shot on a wide open 65mm (I think, or 100...) Master Prime.

The Epic LOVES Masterprimes. I think it maybe is because the cam (possibly) is on par with or outresolves the glass. (just a stupid theory)

All of a sudden these crisp and allmost edgy lenses come to their right as supersmooth.

Love them now
Used to not like them very much.

So if you can afford a set of masters with your Epic....

LOL

So.

That's about it.

Should maybe have taken it into photoshop or shake or something to mask and brighten her eyes a bit, but I love what is available "out of the box" in the free tools given us by RED. Too...

And when doing a test like this, it is fun to try to stay within the framework of tools that we all have access to for free...

Adds a bit to the challenge...

The "simple blend" really didn't work on the HDRx in this image, but I cannot remember when I last used that mode, after Magic Motion entered the scene...

My only complaint when working this way, is that I cannot get the HDR image out of the rocket... Makes the colorwork a bit more a guessing-game than I'd have liked it to be....

Anyhow!

Thanks for the kind words!

And: Yes David... My days are rather long'ish....

hahaha

Cheers!

A nice little tidbit of what I was testing on the shoot with Benedicte, was that I shot with the RedLogFilm LUT ON all the time.

Haven't been advicing anyone to leave it on like that, but it sure gave a lot of controll when lighting - if you are capable of interpreting the preview that way...

THAT was part of the test, though, and I can fully see situations where i would work like that...

Wow Gunleik, thanks for the gorgeous photos of what this camera can do with the right setup etc etc.

I have a question about the RED primes.

Like many, I am quietly and happily waiting for delivery of a scarlet and in the mean time I am trying to figure out what else I need, such as what type of lens and support etc.
You mention you shot those pics with the RED primes. Of course with unlimited budgets, primes would obviously be the way to go and RED's would be a good choice of course.
I know everyone has different views on what is good enough, so hearing what the experts say, is hard for me to tell what's what. I feel it is like asking a motor car expert what car I should buy.

So is there some way I can see the difference between say, a Canon 24 1.4 and the RED prime ? No one in my state has primes for me to see through, so I was wondering if there are some photos shot in comparison.

I have the same problem trying to work out what support is best to give me smooth enough motion as I am not so keen on the floating image for every scene.

Thanks again for your truly inspiring photos.

As I don't use still-glass, I cannot compare...

And just the first bunch were shot on RPPs, the rest is shot on Master Primes + a couple (the kids) on Optika Elite 200mm

So I'll refrain to comment on what I know... :)

I love the RPP's, but... the wider lenses are heavy. Heavier than Master Primes.
Compared to Canons, you'll have no auto nothing.

I like the RPPs a lot.
Some don't, due to unprecise markings and not the right throw...
If you're on your own anyway and as an alternative to still glass...
I'd have done the RPPs, if that wa a real option...

OR look for a set of zeiss standards or superspeeds, as they are much lighter and still very nice.

We've been happy with the Elite set we bought, and are looking into the Angie Optimo DP lightweight zooms instead of buying a 4th set of primes...

Many options out there.

If I was on a semi-tight budget, I'd have considered the RED 17-50 for the wide end, and bought the 85 and 100 on the long. Then you'd have a lightweight and nice place to start.

The RED 300 is one of the loveliest lenses I know, but that is a matter of taste....

But that's just me...

Cheers!
