  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1st 24 hours with an Epic

Lomo squarefront Anamorphic - not a real test, but still fun...

So this doesn't really qualify as a test, except for seeing how much it vignettes and flares.

Still quite nice.

No HDRx

And here is the 1080 h264. The banding is due to the webencoding...

Again:
What impresses me most with the Epic is how beautifully it overexposes.

I don't know if the technical measurable DR is "very" similar to the R1 MX (Which I actually guess it isn't...), but the useable latitude outside the sensors sweetspot is what makes this thing sing!

Overexposure can be beautifull (or you may use HDRx...)

Cheers

Some more lowlights

Sure... I could make images looking like this with the R1 M or MX as well, but again, this works just off the bat, without taking a post-process into account already when shooting...

I just love how the MX in the Epic is well fed, and doesn't fall off a cliff in the bottom, and still handles the overexposure in the other extreme.

Smooth and meaty!

Me likes!

When does one want such a picture? Is it 3:1? I thought 2.4:1 was the widest available.

Just asking ...

wow!, what a look the ANA Lomo!

Why I'd like to see an invers HDRx function...

Why I'd like to see an invers HDRx function...

So today I went into the bright sun with the Epic, and had some new experiences...

1st. I really want the EVF....

2nd. "Inverse HDRx would be nice".

And here's why...

Let's say I want this image:

001_x.jpg

Well... That's exposure at 180 degrees + 4 stops from this image:

001_a.jpg

Fine....

Thing is that it is really hard to pull focus from the 2nd example....
I tried today... In the bright sun.... Without an EVF.

In this case, it would be nice to give the channel with the highest shutter preview priority.

That could be done with a "negative" X-channel.

OTOH...

Never leave home on a sunny day without a mattebox and an ND12 or two...

though.... Here's another example. Choose yourself which one you'd like to pull focus from...

Reverse HDX... I'm intriged! What would be the pratical purpose of such a feature? Is it so you can shoot outside on a sunny day without ND filters and without having to stop all the way down? Thanks Gunleik, your tests are always rad :)

Gunleik, I think you are asking to view the X frame while focusing and exposing.
We do recommend that you keep the A (normal) frame as normal as possible and
using the X frame for highlight protection.

Deanan.
I do understand the concept... :-))

Just thinking out loud here...

Jim was jokingly saying in the "barn" thread something along the lines of "we are pretty much forgetting the NDs at home these days".

And I guess people might want to try that for mini-setup reasons.
And yet others because they haven't figured out how motion-blur affects stutter... :-))
Or iris DOF...

Watching the X-channel to judge Focus (not overall exposure), or better: Being able to A/B the channels prior to record and choose which one to monitor while recording...

Just thinking out loud, but I think those might be good tools....

I won't spend much more time on the argument, though...

Cheers

And thanks again for the most fun camera made yet!

Just the thought of this argument NOT being hypothetical, is mind-bogling...

curious about that as well, nuke's furnace_motion blur (basically kronos) seems to do fairly well with sharply defined footage (like a typical x tracK), though sometimes when i use it i have the pleasant task of painting out artifacts. it'll get you in there though. haven't used reelSmart... and i'm assuming that the foundry's contribution to hdrX blending shares the same concept, though i'm hoping it's even better.

In my opinion Twixtor beats them both by a wide margin. Fast too, and cheap.

OK.... Tease. But I'll be AB'ing Epic and Alexa the whole tomorrow...

Stay tuned...
And please suggest stuff.

My main focus will be motion.

Cheers!

Just in from shooting and still copying cards and SSDs.... So this is just an undocumented quickie which I may well have to step back from, but:

Seems the Epic is calibrated to the same highlight tolerance as the Alexa, which is good news if it comes through in the files, too.

That's like an ND6 out of the Matte and a ton less IR issues, compared to the R1 MX.

Much more to report, but that was one thing to make me an even more smiling guy today...

More to come...

Cheers!

So...

Before going any further... I felt like revisiting the image from that first day. And just putting out a couple of series of what I shot on that Epic 1st day...

So here Goes... 1st series...

I don't do Ketch stuff...
Ketch does Ketch stuff... :-))

Edit... The images are really 1280... Dunno why they get scaled...

So... the point of publishing these images?

Basically that the Epic handles hard exposure situations with mature confidence.

Not once was I thinking during that day that:
"Hey... That's not really an issue, I'll fix that in post".

Which was an immensly bigger relief than I'd ever imagined.

When you add that this cam behaves well at both extremes of the exposurerange...

Gee. We're sort of back to ONLY making images.

Epic is not a shrinked R1 MX in any way I can see.

Epic is a totally new and great camerasystem of its own merit.

I DID expect that... Great to see that that assumption holds true!
