  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1st 24 hours with an Epic

Does resolution matter?

Does resolution matter?

Remember this image?

Let's go 1:1 pixel on that:

RPP 85 @ 1.8, for anyone curious abot that...

So...
Jim and I have had some disagreements as to the implimentation of 4k in the livingroom. A disagreement I eventually am bound to lose, as we're just disagreeing on timeframe.

As to cinematic presentations...
Well we do agree.

And I know now which camera can handle the big screen in an elegant way, as to resolution... As there was any doubt...

I have seen similar blowups from other cameras, even the R1 MX...
Just look at all the juice in the Epic image even at 1:1 from a 4 stop overexposure pushing the X channel as long as it goes...

Those eyes are worth looking at, and the Epic gives me the chance to do that.

Or... Hey, there might be contenders, like the F65, but as of more-or-less-available cameras, this is the juice and the F65 still have a long development cycle ahead of it before it's ready for primetime. At an unknown pricetag...

Reframing for 1080 anyone? :-)

(Yes Jim. You can have my bank account number, but I will still speak nicely about the Epic...)

Amazing! I can see the individual shadows from her eyelashes on her eyes... cool :)

Sidenote - RedLogFilm in-camera

Sidenote - RedLogFilm in-camera

So, this is a horse I've been beating almost to death since 2008... And here it is alive and kicking:

Log preview on the cam.

Problem is that I don't have any real good examples for why I want it, a lot because I was using the feauture when I was shooting.

The applications for this feature is worth a full article of its own, so I won't dig into that.

I just hope it's possible to program a userbutton with:
Redlogfilm/320ISO/5600k

and pop to that view and back to my original setup whenever I want.

So... here's an example:

As shot:

And with redlogfilm at 320:

So... if you are wondering if you are overexposing, you can quickly check it visually, too. Not only on the meters.

This feature has a lot of further applications, too, especially in monitorchains - but I'll find another time and place to discuss that.

That's all for now folks. Ought to get some sleep, but please discuss, that's why I am posting this here.

And then I'll go on posting more examples tomorrow.

Cheers

And thanks to RED for bothering making this camera, probably ditching 90% of what they had done at several stages to get here.

Did the Epic you used have RedLogFilm as a viewing option? I'm pretty sure the one Ted brought to Istanbul had it. You may have to use 3 different buttons in order to change Gamma Space, ISO, and WB, but there are plenty of assignable buttons on the grip. I really like the idea. Its nice to be able to show people who don't understand a histogram that the highlights are still there.

WOW on the 1 to 1 +4 stop!!!

Great stuff.

I also much like the log visual tool.
The old meters were silly with Histos and Traffic light based on rec 709 etc (gamma space/colour) rather than RAW.
Certainly a log tool will be a great visual tool for quickly judging exposure.

Just a thought, but what if Red made a recording option on their future proxy module that was similar to Alexa's Log C and Sony's S-Log using RedLogFilm? I'm not even sure if anyone would want to do this or not. I think most will still choose to record and work with RAW files (I will), however people seem to like the Log files the other camera manufacturers are using. Plus, you would be able to record both at the same time... if we are talking about a proxy module. Would such a recording format (4:2:2 or 4:4:4 RedLogFilm) be useful to any of you guys and gals? Thanks.

Nice exercise... love to see more.

Jim

Brighter than the desert barn shot?

Jim

Gunleik -- I'd really like to see some high contrast sun-in-the-shot HDRx where it's pushed to the extremes.

Any chance of pointing it out a window?

curious about that as well, nuke's furnace_motion blur (basically kronos) seems to do fairly well with sharply defined footage (like a typical x tracK), though sometimes when i use it i have the pleasant task of painting out artifacts. it'll get you in there though. haven't used reelSmart... and i'm assuming that the foundry's contribution to hdrX blending shares the same concept, though i'm hoping it's even better.

Hi again.

This is is (as allways) part of a prep. This time for a 6 month 2-camera Epic TV-thriller shoot starting in October. I am fortunate enough to be allowed to publish the tests, because I and those who engage me agree that the more I and "people" know and discuss the cameras and workflows we use, the better the results will be. There's no reason to keep knowledge like this in-house, and if I draw mistaken conclusions, I can have them corrected, instead of basing workflow decissions on the wrong premises.

Knowledge is good.

So:
Yes, I'll probably go through the requests over 4-5 days of test shooting, and: yes, there will be motion examples of HDRx from this first day of shooting, but this time, because I considered resolution to be a non issue, and from what I saw from the Epic Reel, my main focus was on challenging but fun use of a nice camera...

I know I can break the image of the Epic... I allready have and most likely will try to continue to challenge the boundaries, BUT my main focus now is to rejoice all the fun stuff you can do with it.

Since the original RED One M, this is the first camera I really want to take home...

OK

Back to light-hearted testing... :-))

You think I had it for 24 hours without pointing it out the window? :-))

There will be more, but did you check the movie clip? That's handily 16-17 stops of range...

Hi Gunlike

I have been playing with some footage from Epic, and I really like the HDRX mode, but I experienced a few things.
Maybe they are solved by now but when you shot in HDRX mode you actually shoot 2 files with different shutterspeeds.
Let´s say , file 1 is exposed at 1/50 and file 2 is exposed at 1/400. File 2 are now 3 stops underexposed. That means you potentially are dealing
with flicker issues with the use of light. I saw the issues inside a car ( instruments were flickering). Lightcross lights were flickering. This was a test
where the picture were heavy overexposed but were possible to recover by using more from file 2 with a higher shutterspeed. You just move
the slider in Redcine X. Here you have to be carefull not to use the HDRX to much because of the shutter issues.
The still image looks super but when you play it the flicker are there. The other thing has been addressed with different blur on the two files
by using software from The Foundry I think.
Have you experienced any of this ?

Best

Thanks Gunleik, nice exercise.
I Can't wait to exercise this machine too ;)
Have fun my friend!
Cheers

I'll definitely be postinng more hdrx footage...
I'll comment as I post.

Interesting observations, though. Thanks for that!

Cheers

Sorry for the delay... Things happen.

More next week.

But Epic is a more gorgeous camera than wwhat you can read from the numbers...

Awesome tests Gunleik! I was waiting for someone to do something like this. Thanks for sharing, super helpful.
