  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I was watching a pigeon and decided to put a 180mm in front of the Epic and give a try to the 1K ws at high frame rate.
Me like it!
It can be really handy in some cituations.
You guys at Red quarter never sleep.
What a lucky user I'm.
Cheers

Edit:
And on that sample I tryed to push the frame rate a little bit higher with twixtor. Aka 30% (1333fps)

Brice, did you sharpen or alter the image in some ways in post?

So far almost every clip I've seen in 1K WS is not as sharp as yours.

Well, maybe it's just the 180mm Leica doing its magic.

With Twixtor it is luck of the draw - you never know when ghastly actifacts will rear their most unpretty heads. You can't count on Twixtor to work, and about as often as not it fails. Plus, it never looks quite the same.

This looks great. Whether it's the Leica glass, or how it was shot & graded, def the best 1K clip I've seen so far. And...kinda funny...those small plumes of feather dust floating away from the pigeon is kinda hilarious...it's like city dirt flying off...

pretty cool... the noise doesn't look too crazy either. I think the noise levels at high frame rates continue to get better with newer builds.

Absolutely, you can spot the pixel smearing from a mile away unless the original footage falls within very very narrow parameters.

Looks cool, but the motion blur is really ugly :(

Hello guys,
so, where do I start....
This was shot at Red code 4/1
No CC there, just export the clip with RCX and applyed an unsharp mask in after effect for the first cut,
I wanted to see more the small particules of feders poping out from the bird.
As for the hugly motion blur, shutter was at 1/400 + the Epic was on a monopod and you can notice the camera is moving a lot.
I should have gone with a 1/800 shutter but wanted more room for focusing.

Anyway I think the relative perception of sharpness is also due to the lens aswell.
The 180mm is a Leica R apo Telyt model F3.4 maybe not the best 180mm from Leica, but it is a really small and compact tele photo.
Two samples shot at 5K with the Apo Telyt to give you an idea of what that lense is capable to do.

Here the flag is aprox 250 meters from the camera.

If you shoot relatively high fps with short exposure times, Twixtor is doing a much better job than stretching low fps. Shooting 200 fps for example and only filling every other frame looks pretty good in many cases.

Maaan... the Epic is one bad Mother shut yo mouth=) I have to find away to afford that!! say what.. new goal.

As a rule, the more complex and fast the motion, and the more lines cross over each other, the worse the artifacts. But you still never REALLY know until it's too late, and it rarely looks quite right. 50% speed is more or less the limit before weirdness happens.

Agree with Rob.
Another thing Twixtor doesn't like is a frame with blur in it.
In that particular case (pigeon flying away) You will be really lucky to acheive good results with Twixtor even at 50% speed.
