  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

18-85 T2.9 RED zoom...

A long shot and I 'write' this in an almost unaudible tone.. ahem.. is there an exchange program where we can send our 18-50 lens and get the 18-85? Of course we will pay the difference.

Someone from Red Team can correct if I am wrong, but here is my take.

The camera does not have too many mechanical parts and can be easily refurbished and resold as new, or just as good as new, even if it was not looked after. So, it has a value to the company.

Glass, if used and/or abused, can suffer much higher degree of wear and tear. It is something that can not be easily recycled. It is also a small(er) value item, so it would be too much hassle for little gain.

I would also think that retail margins on the lenses would be very slim, so Red would be almost certainly losing money on such exchange.

Common sense tells me that, despite best intentions, this is something that would not work.

Just get another lens - they are good value. There is no such thing as too many lenses :clown2:

I guess that's called Ebay…

I honestly think you should keep that lens. I thought about it as well but after seeing the 18-85 in person "IT'S A GIANT"! It will break your shoulder, I wouldn't recommend car mounting, will need at least a 2 man crew, you get the idea. The magic of the 18-50 is it's size...

Double down?

Double down?

Selling the 18-50mm is a tough call. It is wonderfully small & light, has excellent close focus and is optically good. Its just hard to justify having both the 18-50 and the 18-85 in my kit when there are so many other items that would improve my package I could spend that cash on. Just sayin...

18-50mm Zoom

The more I use the 18-50mm zoom the more I like it. Don't know why more people are not singing it's praises. If at all possible keep it.

I can only second this. Small, compact zoom with great optical quality and acceptable mechanics. We made a test with an older Arri (Zeiss) prime at the same focal length and stop, and it easily outperformed it: less distortion and better MTF.
The camera guy from a German film academy who had his first look at a Red One then commented it as: "Wow, you can really test lenses with that beast!"

18-50

18-50

A couple of times a a year I travel with my Red in a very light set up, I can get everything I need on my back, including CF sticks and fluid head. The compact size and light weight of the 18-50mm is perfect in this situation. I try not to shoot it wide open though, mine is only sharp from about 5.6 and smaller.

It will work with a FF35 sensor too

All of RED's lenses will "work" with FF35. If you are saying that it will cover the entire FF35 frame, then I'm not so sure. Have you tested to verify this? Or are you simply operating on the assumption that this lens is a re-housed FF still lens and that RED has made no modifications that would affect its coverage?

If this is true, wouldn't the 18-50 become a 10-30mm on the FF35?

"wouldn't the 18-50 become a 10-30mm on the FF35"

NO , it will always be a 18-50mm on any camera ....

Even with a rehoused stills lens it may not cover FF35 if the rehousing was not performed with that coverage in mind. There are numerous mechanical reasons for this but also optical ones. It is not good to have extra light bouncing around behind the lens so it is generally best to make a lens only project a bit bigger than its intended format coverage. Why do you think the 18-85 has that rectangular mask on the front?

I think he means FOV equivalents for a still lens.

I'm buying a Red One in the beginning of January and I would like to know how long the offer is good for the upgrades?

I think people need to get over the FOV equivalents in terms of mm's. It just confuses everything.

Some people are accustomed to S35, some people FF35, but 85mm is always 85.

85mm is super-wide in 617, normal in 645, mild tele in FF35, tele in S35 and long tele in 2/3".
