Greetings fellow redusers...

This years Burning Man theme is the "American Dream" and I just wanted to say thank you to the RED team for building one of the best cameras in the world, and then another thank you to this community for supporting it. I am sorry I dont have a link to post now but follow this thread cause I have some great material of the real life here in black rock city.

There is probably 40 thousand plus people here by now and I spend most my days in center camp which I consider one of great cross roads of the universe...all walks of life come to visit and about 15 times a day I hear..."RED CAMERA!" from some smiling face, lots of photos taken as well so I am sure they will surface in time.

Day IV...images and footy to share soon...wish me luck.

Best

Clay

UPDATE: Thanks for being patient with this thread, I received my R3ds back from the Hedge production so stating tonight I will be uploading some images and sharing footy.

Again It was a great pleasure working with and being the 1st RED on the playa at the Burning Man gathering this year and look forward to doing it again next year.

A brave new world for a brave new man with a brave new camera!

Nice to meet you at the temple, Haskell. I can't wait to see footy, but you go ahead and decompress.

It was a pleasure meeting you as well Jeff...and on a sacred grounds. I should say the same to all redusers whos path I crossed while out in the middle of black rock city.

I just got home, I am in some serious need of decompression but I promise to upload some footage as soon as I receive it from the production. This years burn was by far my best and I finally found my ying and yang of working while participating in black rock city...not only am I very excited to share this footage but I feel a responsibility to do so.

I will start gathering other field notes I can share about my experience...in a nutshell...RED rocked 10 days in the dessert only over heating on me one time. Some things about the camera made my life difficult but mostly related to just menu settings etc...even with insanely harsh conditions (understatement) I was able to grab the barrel, set the exposure, pull focus and roll on the shot. In the end RED prevailed. Would I do it again? Yes...with Scarlet perhaps.

A friend just sent me a pic I will attach here. The filmmaker to my right is a burner who has been shooting 16mm and 35mm film for 13 years out on the playa and he was of great assistance to me on numerous occasions chasing down the sunsets with his mini cam cart. Perhaps we will have some comparisons to surface as well.

Stay tuned for footage!

Cheers.

You are a digital jihadist, Clay. Respect!

Great still of the two of you - and your Red must be on top of the "coolest looking RED" :)

Looking very much forward to footage and the final product. Put me on the pre-order hidef DVD (maybe the first Doc to be released on RedRay?) :weight_lift:

Haha...you guys crack me up. I am dyeing to go through my material and review everything, I have only seen it one time and thats when I was shooting it...living in it.

I must admit something special happened out there this year... and while the documentary is entering post production I will post some grabs of my footy starting tonight.

In the mean time I will share an image...I met a girl who offered to brand me, she used a crystal ball (note picture) and harnessed the suns light to etch this brand on my leg...solar scaring if you will. We started somewhere in center camp and by the time we finished we were in the center of center camp...the heart. Light was barreling down and my leg was smoking, she had to wear goggles it was so bright. We then headed out to the temple and gathered suit from the ashes to make an ink and ink the scar in...I stripped down many layers this year and found myself close to the core and wanted to mark the occasion.

Yes sir.
10 days, no hick ups. I'll try to get some stills/footy up soon as well.
With an incredibly simple protection rig (i.e. carefully implemented Ziplocs and gaff tape) the RED ran smooth through the most penetrating dust known to man.
I even rolled during a whiteout with no complications.
Happy decompression, Clay!
cheers

Some frame grabs of center camp cafe, one of my favorite places in Black Rock City. Center camp has two stages, a cafe and a performance space in the middle. These particular grabs are of a family from the netherlands I met, they were an incredible and beautiful bunch and we sat and people watched for the afternoon...this is one of the many highlights of the week.

Lens: Vintage Nikon Vivitars 35-110 and 70-200 zooms.

EDIT: I wanted to add to this post. The images were not altered in post...they are soft looking mainly due to the build up of dust on my lens and the air. I could drop the blacks and clean them up etc but the way they look now was the way it looked then so I did not feel like changing it much for now.

Let me be very clear, I did not shoot the "titty parade"...I am not interested in being a part of the press slobbering over this event. I feel too many press are already allowed on the playa and this takes away from peoples experience...my friends that were in that parade were not comfortable with the amount of shooters that covered them like paparazzi.

I did face many dust storms and managed to deal with it by covering up all the buttons on the camera with a heavy duty cerand wrap and taped it off. I also used a thick fur material to wrap around all the vents so it would filter the dust coming into the camera. This actually worked out pretty well, camera only over heated one time and it look as clean as it did when I 1st took delivery.

Exactly! I did use screw on NDs and Polas...I did not want to futz with a MB out there cause all the glass in front of the lens would be covered in dust every second and you are always fighting it so with screw ons, you just need to wipe way the front of your lens every so often depending on the weather, every few seconds! I had an assistant who was basically, always wiping my lens down. I did fight with lens flares but more often then not they were a nice effect...you learn to stop fighting anything and just surrender to the playa, then everything you truly desire will just manifest around you.

This pic was just sent to me...you can see clearly how I covered up the buttons with cellophane...and I taped up any and areas dust could get to, like the adjustable mount, CF slot etc. I will find more pics of the rear of the camera but its pretty much covered in cellophane but loose enough so I can operate over it. Also note the fur material for covering vents, its all I had...Hedge mentioned a better choice to some kind of air filter material for vents etc but we forgot to get it...I think the combo of the two would have been ideal...air filter + fur for the playa ;)

Great stuff Clay!

Keep us posted....

Dave
