  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

17-50mm V2

Special set of jigs we created to do this without compromising quality control. We can see about doing it in REL in the future.

Brent, i think Norbert was talking about Red UK/Red Europe handling the shipping back and forth to Irvine as opposed to sending it 'personally'. Some people over here seem to get stung quite a bit on import/export taxation which perhaps shipping within the same company may well avoid.

the only difference being that the hood has gone from a big flying saucer to a more "normal" 114mm diameter.

I guess this means that the hood is the same length as before? (Front element still as recessed.)
So still not very matte box-friendly at 17mm... ?

Uhh, Jarred....

My biggest compliment to the choice of the front diameter :) As if you knew you couldn't tempt me with a prime, but short zoom with a 114mm front...now we are talking :)

This is awesome news! Can't wait to get mine updated. Thanks Red!

Agreed. I now will seriously consider getting this lens. The large front diameter on the hood was a real limiting factor.

Jarred,

Can you post photos of the lens at both ends of the zoom range, showing the focus scale? It's hard to see how wide the hood is for attaching a clip-on Mattbox.

Also, does the front hood move in and out when zooming? Or just the internal elements?

Sorry, I've not played with this lens yet. Looks really sweet though!

M

Front hood does not move at all at any point of zoom or focus... only the internal cell moves, and it never moves anywhere near far enough to get even close to the front of the hood.

Looks hardcore Jarred.
Very nice.

Do want.

Can we keep the old hood as a souvenir ? Just to hold on to a bit of red history? I mean after the mod...

We are working with RED EUROPE on logistics, yes. I would assume if you bought it from RED EUROPE, it would go back to there then come to Irvine. But, again, letting the logistics guys confirm.

V2 of the 17-50mm lens isnow in stock. Optically they are identical to the first version, the only difference being that the hood has gone from a big flying saucer to a more "normal" 114mm diameter.

Existing owners can get their hoods upgraded for a $250 fee, you send your lens to Irvine and we will swap it out and send it back to you.

This upgrade will happen through our upgrade program and owners of the 17-50mm will receive an email with instructions

Amazing news, thats what i was waiting for. is the zoom now a bit lighter cause of the smaller Hod?

I have had the privilege of having and using my 2x 17-50V2s and I have to say I love these lenses! They are a great size now.

Mechanically they are way WAY better than the old 18-50s.

I will report more soon.

Prost,
Rich

WOW this is interesting news. Jarred can you guys characterise how much this new lens breaths and can we pay extra to have a matched set for 3D use?

Any idea when we will see a new RPP, and what focal length is likely to be up first?

The fact that ocassionally, even RED lenses can be upgraded is just awesome - great news - thank you

Perfect! Thanks Jarred. A perfect compliment to my Epic!

One last question. Does the hood have an internal thread that can take a screw in filter? And if so, what diameter?
