  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

17-50mm RED Pro Zoom...

There was a certain consensus that the Red 18-50 lens had some things in common with the Sigma 18-50. (Like optical design.)

Now the release of the new Red 17-50 lens seems to coincide with the new... Sigma 17-50. Both have 11" close focus. Pure coincidence?

When can I buy one? An official announcement / schedule would be greatly appreciated.

News and tentative schedule at NAB.

Jim

Hmmm, sounds like you are on to something....

Wish there was a credit towards our old 18-50's if new zooms were to be purchased...
just the news of a new zoom coming (even with no delivery date) plus the slashed price of the 18-50 pretty much killed any thought of selling our lenses to recoupe the costs...:anti-old:

Does any company take early versions in trade for old models (RED ONE is the exception)? What do you do with your old computers?

The trick is to use your gear when you get it... shoot it (and make some money), rent it (and make some money)... so that it more than pays for itself before the next round of products comes out.

Only Red has, (that I'm aware of...)
Agree with you in regards to the strategy, we've got such a small window of time before the hardware inevitably changes...
It's a crazy market out here right now, and there's lots of known spending coming up in the foreseeable future visa-vie upgrades...
I just appreciated the credit you applied for old 300 lens owners towards a new set of RPP and was wishing for something similar towards these new zooms.
Best,

Panasonic will take a RED one as trade in for a Varicam 3700... Or a Sony Betacam camera and whatnot. However, even AFTER the trade in you could buy 2 Red One's! Which is exactly what I want to do. Actually, 4 scarlets and an Epic...

Or, with the Red One:

Get early serial number camera. Pay for it with one rental. Keep using it for the next two years. Get a MX sensor upgrade and then sell the camera thousands dollars more than I paid.

All just in time for the new round of products.

I am more than happy with my 18-50mm. I also appreciate that Jim has been very generous with the trade in policy. Thanks, Jim.

I also know that trade in credits for new cameras will most likely end with the switch over to Epic. The glass has been more than fairly priced from the outset and the quality has been more than satisfactory.

The release of the 17-50mm, by all accounts destined to be a fantastic lens, doesn't automatically render the 18-50mm worthless.

Store shows Pro 17-50 zoom and Pro 18-85 zoom... a fair amount of overlap.
...anyone know if a longer Pro zoom was announced?

Steve, the 18-85 is a beast of a lens. Huge! Quality, yes, but HUGE. The 17-50 will be an awesome compact zoom for all sorts of work. Looking forward to more pro lenses! NAB?

My plan currently is the 17-50 pro zoom, and then get the 85mm, 100mm, and 300mm primes. Then expand from there as we get more cameras.

Quite a ride. A little like running in a hamster wheel mounted on a roller coaster maybe.

I was thinking it a little like getting in on an IPO and having the stock double in price, then split in two and doubled again. And finally selling it at its highest point right before another IPO becomes available.

But the hamster works too...

Lens news? hopefully your as eager to take my money as I am to give it to you....

Having now seen more real-world pictures of this lens from NAB, I have to wonder why the front ring is so bloody big when the glass is so small within it. Red couldn't have trimmed a single millimetre off that cowl (pardon my terminology, I don't know what to call it) to make it play nicely with standard matte box sizes?

Does the size of the ring have to do with the field of view at the wider end of the lens?

I'm sure a solution will be developed, and I'll still buy the lens. But why is that front ring so wide?
