  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

17-50mm RED Pro Zoom...

That cannot be the case for a modern lens with such a big image circle, Stephen... apparently it was marked up to 11 because it was an early prototype (strange anyway...)
Guido

Hi Guido,

Are you saying that Physics does not apply to modern lenses?
In any case it's the sensor size that not image circle of the lens with respect to diffraction limits.

I forgot to ask about Epic coverage. I see earlier Jarred said "5k 2:1", does that mean it has a 32mm coverage circle? What about 5k 2.4:1? I am surprised this lens would cover 5k since I thought I read that the 18-500 and the 18-85 did not.

I am very intrigued about this lens after having touched it on Wed.

Does this mean we can place orders? money is burning a hole in my pocket here.

it great that the first batch is shipping out on Friday but what does that mean.... how do you buy one?

He he, certamente, con piacere.

Not knowing how much you know Michael, and or others, but many I believe might have had the same opportunities as I, when at RED Studio Hollywood back in January and then again recently at RED Day event in Vegas.

I spent some time then and recently with the lens, and especially on the Epic fils beautifully balanced, and easy to handle with one hand, extremely well build, just like the rest of the PRO line of RED's lenses, but much smaller then I expected to be, especially when compared to the 18-85, but bigger and heavier then the older 18-50.

Also knowing that the Optics quality is far superior then that of the 18-50 more closely matched to that of the PRO line of Optics, as well as off course it is its build, makes this lens a perfect zoom to hand shoot with, to shoulder mount it, S3D rigs, Steady Cam etc. just simply in my opinion a lens you can't be with out, that simple.

I managed some limited hands-on time with the lens. For about 30 seconds with Ted's non-functional prototype after the FXguide Live show on wednesday. And then on a functional Epic at the RED event. It was hard to tell anything from Ted's unit as I'm sure everyone and their mother had already torqued all the gear rings a time or two and with the camera not operational....

The one on Jim's Epic felt buttery smooth, or at least it did for the less than 20 seconds I actually got to touch it. I love the size and weight of the lens. It's like the RPP version of the 18-50 and it feels just like the RPPs / 18-85. I kinda wish the hood or shroud on the front wasn't quite so big so it could fit within a "normal" mattebox bellows with 138mm rear filter. At 144mm it's the same diameter as the RED 18-85.

The image looked great on the 5" LCD with the limited lighting at the event. I didn't get a good look at how the lens breathed, but I'm not too concerned about that. I'm trying to find a way to work this lens into the budget.
