  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

17-50mm RED Pro Zoom...

Well, we've got some fill light at least! Looking good...

I would love to see RPPs on an Arriflex, although I'm sure the Arri folks wouldn't be so happy. Saw one on an Aaton, but it just didn't have the same effect.

Not hating on Arri of course, I love them dearly. But it would be kind of funny.

Hi,

Why on earth would Arri be bothered in the slightest if you used a RED lens on an Arri camera? I don't see anything funny either people have used all sorts of lenses on Arri cameras over the last 80 years. Whilst Film still yields the best image, it's going to happen for a long time to come.

Stephen, I drew this conclusion from the fact that when I was last at a rental house, I chatted with the Rep about how I'd love to use Panavision glass on a Red with a PV mount. He told me that Panavision would resist me every step of the way if I tried to do that, and that only big names live Steven Soderbergh can get them to bend. I don't know if this is true or not, as I'm still pretty new to the world of professional film/video, and have never rented from PV before. But I assumed that if that were the case, Arri would have a similar attitude- they would prefer that you use their lenses on their cameras. I know that Arri is a manufacturer only, and so would have little ability to control who uses what lenses, but...do you see where I'm going?

From your post, I guess I've drawn a completely incorrect conclusion. Ah well, not the first time my newbiness has shown, I'm sure it won't be the last.

Jim, Jarred,
great news! Very surprising too. I know you wouldn´t tell, but anyway: Who made the glass? Nikon this time?
Thanks,
Marc

Just to point out in case you didn't hear about it before, that Panavision has several panavised Red Ones for rent.

Is it not necessary to understand the personalities of equipment manufacturers to make good art Ryan. I am sure Stephen was just clarifying and not trying to point out anyone's noobiness.

p.s.: That's one fluffy cat. :)

I think I read that once before on this forum, but it doe seem like they're trying to downplay it. I can't find any mention of Red Ones on their isite, even though they mention the Phantom.

I'm sure you're right. I just felt the need to clarify as well.

And that's my Mungus. He's a good boy.

/hijack. Still drooling over the new zoom...

Stephen

this summer i went to ARRI to buy some stuff, my little son (10months old that time) fell asleep in the car, so i took him out of the car and he continued sleeping sitting on my arm, in the other hand i carried my red body. a sales rep came to pick me up at the gate, saw me and said: "sorry, but i can't help you - i can't carry a red over the arri backyard"

i thought he was making a joke, but no: i continued carrying both ;-)

no hard feelings here, but it really happened! (maybe it was an extreme way of misunderstanding)

anyway: looking forward to this neat little red zoom!

kind regards,
martin

but as i said, i didn't take it personal, i was able to carry my two little babies and the rental department seem to be quite cool about red.

peace,
martin

Sanjin, (IF) that were true, then all you would you need from them would be the rights to use a patented optical design, right?
I ask you because I think you would know if this would be the jist of it, and I don't.

So if that is how it would work, then perhaps it is worth mentioning that if this were BASED on a Tamaron optical design, you would still get different (BETTER) glass, radically different (EXCEEDINGLY BETTER) mechanical design, Red coatings, easier serviceability considered into the barrel design, more iris blades, and (FAR) better barrel and mechanics materials. All of it would be subject to (FAR) higher tolerances from top to bottom, in and out, barrel and glass. Furthermore, all of that would be coupled with higher quality control. Add the Red customer service associated with such an investment.

It would would be better in every way (unless you want a stunt lens and don't mind compromising on IQ). It would also be a completely different lens.
