  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

17-50mm RED Pro Zoom...

I can also confirm it works the full range on a MB20-II, I just took off the bellows plate and snugged it right up to the lens. Worked like a charm. No visible vignetting with 4x5.65 filters, even with a 3rd tray.
Thanks for the info Joel, that's good to know!

Has the minimum focusing distance been posted yet?

This has been partly discussed before but is there any possibility to mount a screw UV filter on such a lense ?

The point is using it for run-and-gun documentary style, so there's no way i can put a mattebox and other heavy stuff... But i'm little bit worried about having this expensive lense with no front protection :-(

The glass element barrels outwards similar to the 18-50. So you could attach screw-ons. It seemed larger than a 72mm but I couldn't be sure on Red Day. We'll have to ask one of these lucky first contestants for the actuals.

I think I'd be inclined to give an actor a little more room than a 50mm provides on a closeup.

I don't think any focal length is putting any other focal length out of business. They all have their own feel.

Unfortunately for my talent, be it music video or narrative, I have a tendency to wanna shove cameras in there face... I should probably overcome this as a director... I wonder if its just out of habit?

Really? Not internally focusing? Filter smacking lens?

:frown2:

Somebody confirm plz.

like 18-50

From what I've seen the glass extends during zooming- similar to the 18-50 lens.
So it is internal focusing- just zooming is not "internal"

ahhh thanks JaZ

i can confirm the zoom is telescoping, the focus is internal.

Tests today will show you close focus at both 17 and 50. breathing on a full barrell rack, and the bokeh on all marked focal lengths at about 7 feet away....sorry that is an approx. all shot at a 4.

I hope I get it up for you guys tonight. Really great lens, but the breathing/tracking is the biggest issue with the lens. It does hold focus through out though...

have fun guys its a great lens, just dont rack the whole barrel

If it's like the 18-50 the lens has a cowl which sticks out further than the front element. No chance of smacking into a filter.

Ok guys video will be at this link in about 30 min. Vimeo can be slow at times.

There are a few things to let you know about, if you see a finger in the shot, its cause its holding the filter in place... We have yet to get a mattebox for the lens...thats to come soon. Other than that its a pretty down and dirty quick test. Hope it helps in your purchase decision.

Thanks to Adam of TVC (www.tvcnashville.com) for letting us use their RED. Also thanks to Zach Al-Chokhachi and Jeremy Curtis for assisting me in this test.

In case you were interested in matt boxes for this lens. The Vocas 450 ( which is a pretty awesome MB ) works great. You remove the donut holder and the lens slips right in side. I also managed to make it work with my older chroziel MB, although it isn't quite as slick as the Vocas. What I really want is a light clip on, 2 or 3 stage MB for run and gun travel set ups with the Epic. Any thoughts?

As previously stated, the ARRI MMB-1 with the optional 143mm clamp back is the unit for you. In this configuration it would provide two 4x5.65 filter trays, the rear one rotating.

Any update about delivery dates for the 17-50 Red Pro Zoom Metric?

I ordered mid May...

We are announcing the release of the new RED 17-50mm T 2.9 Pro Zoom.

The Space Shuttle program is ending soon (2, possibly 3 more launches). You should see if you can figure out a way to get a 5k S35 of one sort or another either at the launch pad during the launch, at the Shuttle Landing Facility during a landing or, even better, on-board for some 5k video during the ISS flyaround for which this particular lens would be ideal IMHO.

We won't have another chance. The recent IMAX effort was on the SM4 mission to Hubble, not to ISS, so they could use some good quality video during the flyaround. I suppose an EPIC + this lens + storage for half an hour would weigh a lot less than an IMAX camera with even 90 seconds of film.

Just a thought.

Thank you! It looks like a GREAT lens!!!

Seems like there is a bit of breathing at 17mm though. I thought breathing was always more pronounced when zoomed in but it might be more of a mechanics dependent thing? Still, who cares!! This thing is a BEAST!

Please post some flaring tests if you feel like it. It would be much appreciated. Or a full res grab or two!

Thank you for posting this Ryan!

Stephen, what's the optical quality like?

Hi Rick,

I've got no idea, sorry.

As luck would have it, I checked in with my bomb squad rep about the lens while I was at RED dropping off my camera for the MX upgrade on Friday, so I now have a new lens, but no camera body to test it with.

Hopefully that situation will be rectified in the next week or so.

Steve
