  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

17-50mm RED Pro Zoom...

I take delivery on one tomorrow and will grab some test shots on a eyewear campaign I am shooting soon. It will be ext daylight in a park with models. I will let you know Shawn about the optical flat but for sure you can get one. Yes it will cover 5k 2:1 on epic X but I believe in full frame mode there is a tiny bit of vignette at 17, just shoot 18 plus.

okay, last question, has anyone figured out how to buy a 139mm optical flat screw-on for the front? that was nice about the old lens was that it only needed like a 58mm or something

Jim did mention that the lens will cover Epic 5K from 18mm upwards, but since the Epic sensor is little larger, it will actually give You the same FOV as the 17 on RED ONE...

You don't need the 139 screw-on - the front element is 67mm, the only thing is that You need to buy slim filters. I have got a full set of 67mm ND's, Pola and UV just for this lens that work just fine and I can stack two comfortably without vignetting the lens, or affecting the mechanics (the front element "dives in" on the 17mm end, but there is plenty of space for slim filters)...

I'll post some pics later tonight...

Cheers,

Peter

Assuming i remove the front hood, how many mm's do I strip off the barrel. Does it get it down to 138mm maybe?

EDIT: this pic is from a different thread, i believe that lens is the RPZ 17-50 with the front hood removed. I am wondering if you remove the front hood, what is the final measurement of the barrel, I am hoping it is a size that works with lmb5, lmb4a, or even mb20.
Just in case you guys want to take a look at me holding Epic :)

Jarred's Epic :D

Just bought!!!!!

I don't own one, though I can really see myself investing on this zoom as my first professional film lens. It looks like it would really hold its value for a very long time, and it would be more than useful, to say the least. So I am wondering if Red can offer a hood replacement service. Is that something you would consider?

It is not a big deal of course, but it would not only make it look cooler (we are not perfect ;) but it would also shave a few ounces and keep the size down for those who could really use that. Perhaps the diameter of the replacement could be 80mm if it were short enough? Or some other popular choice of diameter? That would be even more meaningful than the weight, size and looks advantage.

I have only cleaned lenses before, but it would seem that it wouldn't be a complicated service to offer and it would be worth a few hundred bucks. Duclos or an other respected service house could handle it if it helped Red to outsource the service, but owners would of course want Red to certify them for this particular service so that warranties weren't voided.

Is Red considering this sort of thing?

The hood is too big. Flat out. Allow it to be removed under warranty. Jarred uses it that way.

How about....

Have it removed if you wish and don't post pictures of it all over this forum.
No drama, case closed:seeya:

I would love to see some picture of this lens with the hood removed. I just got mine delivered, (Thanks Dan, for being an awesome rep!) but the hood is really ginormous. The biggest problem with removing the hood would be if you used it without a mattebox. But with a mattebox is a problem with the hood.
