Okay guys, sorry but will not have time to shoot anything till the weekend, but since I got several inquiries on how the 17-50 compares to the 18-50 and how big is really the front element, I made few shot of comparison.

First off, this lens is extremely well build, and the Aperture, Focus and Zoom ring movements are very smooth and pleasingly better, by a lot form the original 18-50, and incredible lens for the price, especially for what you can get a used one now, but the 17-50 is in a world of its own, just like the 18-85.

While the front element is quite wide, I still see some serious applications for S3D shooting with even a Beam Splitter, were a ring adjustment can be used to fit in the actual Lens element an effectively closing out any incoming light were the front outer construction might not allow to enter the usual Lens opening, on the S3D rigs, which is much smaller Diameter.

But what I can say for sure is that the 17-50, this little Beauty, will be no doubt my Primary Travel lens on my Personal Epic-X!!

Two questions:

Does the front fit in an MB-20? And will it hold focus perfectly through zoom range?

yes it holds focus and yes if you remove the back rubber donut.....mmmmm donuts...

this is how the 18-50 should have been all along, very smooth feel and crisp
images.

Most welcome guys.

Weight on this beauty is 3.2LB, as Paul answered it those feet well on the MB20II, but I will be using the new MB28 till Red MB ships.

I ordered as the immediate moment is was announced ;~)

Focusing looking thru the 7" is just beautiful, but will have to record some shots to analyze closely, but usually I don't do this kinda of stuff, tot technical for me, he he I like to shoot pretty girls instead ;~)

Can't wait to shoot some magic with it.

Most welcome Eli,

yeah I know and actually your rig is pretty wide on the lens opening, unlike some others, but to what I see the most important part is the actual Glass element, the outer construction can be taped out and or fitted with a Rubber Donut, but some vignetting will be evidently seen at the widest setting, so a modification of the Lens opening on the S3D rig it self is recommended.

Taking my fair share of S3D rig considerations my self for my final decision to buy one to take to Italy and t the moment considering the ET Pulsar with the pluses for the two Epic-X, and the 3Ality TS-5 but unfortunately the guys at 3Ality so far have no provided with good service, in fact they have provided no service at al, not a single PM, Email and phone call have been returned, so it looks like ET fro me ;~)

Thanks Ketch. It really sounds like the bargain of the century. The most affordable top-shelf IQ zoom, with the most useful range for ~S35, and very fast for M-X. All in a small and light package with great RP mechanics.

Now I just need to buy one for personal use. :drool5:

I tell you Robert, if there is one lens I will never do with out, will have to be the 17-50, I see so much use off this little beauty is not even funny, you'll see when I get my Epic-cameras one will have the 17-50 likely glued on.

The front of the 17-50 is the same size as the 18-85 and will fit (tightly) into a MB 20 matte box. I was in the Red store yesterday and held the 2 lenses together front to front to see if there was a difference, they are the same diameter.

Ketch, will it accept screw in filters on the moving front element protrusion inside the massive 144mm front outer housing ? If so what diameter threads are used. ?

its 67mm but it will vignette if you use more than one filter.

Will try the Polarized filter on it and let you know Matt.

Ketch, i have to agree with you. The 17-50 is a very useful lens, very light and sharp. it has a nice warm quality to it. i have had mine for 10 weeks and it has been used often, on days when we are short of time, with plenty of setups to achieve it is most useful. For the money without doubt the best value glass around.
