  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

*** 17-50 is a little Master Piece, just like the Big Brother the 18-85 ***

I have always been known as a Prime guy, but lately with the ever growing quality of zooms I'm becoming more keen on using them, and looking to expend my use of them in my projects, glad that you like too Robert, and Michael, trust me you made the right decision in ordering it, you will come to love it as soon as you use it.

Is the 17-50mm just a newer rehousing of the same lens as the 18-50mm? Look very similar from the front. You say the 17-50mm improves upon the 18-50mm but is this in the build quality more than the image or is there a visible difference in image too?

Thanks
Paul

I see much difference in IQ as well Paul, but will record some comparable shots when the MX cameras return.

Even if they were just rehoused 18-50's they would have done an incredible job, on the mechanics and build quality over all, as well as the gear them selves as they are super smooth, no too smooth, but just the perfect amount of resistance while rotating the gear of Aperture, Focus and Zoom.

If it was the same glass, which I sure think is not, they would have done something completely different inside as the glass simply seems to render image and sharpness way better at list on the monitor side by side.

It's mainly the extended front element that makes me think they have the same origin. Had the 17-50mm been designed from the ground up I'm sure a cine lens designer would've done it differently. That said, they may have coated the lenses differently, put in a new iris etc which would improve the lens quality. Look forward to the side by side.

I am very interested to see things shot with this glass, anything out there already someone can reference? Your making me want to pull the trigger on this puppy.

If you watch the Amy Grant video "better than a Hallelujah," you will see it used in all the wide 17mm shots, and any close ups on recording equipment. Only used during the white cyc scenes, as a reference.

If it were rehoused 18-50...then...it would be a new 18-50, not 17. The image quality is quite a cut above the old 18-50
