'Silicon Power' have launched 16Gb & 32Gb "300x Compact Flash Card" Has anyone tested or considered testing this card? Will it work with the Red Compact Flash Module?
I've made an assumption that the Red Compact Flash Cards are the Lexar 300x UDMA cards? The Silicon Power cards appear to be similar spec?

Regards

Olly

I hope so. So far, all of the other 300x cards have not passed the Red test.

no chance - since built 15 no other cf card than a red one will work. that´s what we dedected. we used some sony cards with built 13 and 14 and they worked pretty good - we know that the quality and speed of the sony card is ab bit better as the red one.
there must be a communication between the camera and the cf card, there seems to be a little ID on the cf card, which gives the camera the signal work or do not work !

perhaps someone at Red could clarify this please. I feel the whole issue of CF cards is quite problematic. If as is suggested this is some kind of flag on the Red cards it feels like we are being held to ransom (which does not seem to fit in with the Red philosophy I must add).

There are 2 issues here: 1. this effectively means that the only way to purchase compatible CF cards is via mail order. For those of us outside of the US this will mean no chance of extra cards quickly in an emergency - even inside the US there would be a delay.
2. The price and capacity of CF cards is dropping - already there are a few manufacturers who make 16Gb cards with "minimum sustained read/write speeds" of 300x (or above). They are at the moment about 20% cheaper than the Red 16Gb card. If we have to purchase cards from Red apart from the $550 price tag we will have shipping, import duty and local taxes to add to that, bumping the price up by at least a further 20%. Not an attractive proposition.

Anyone (at Red or elsewhere) got any comments on this?

I'm still waiting patiently for my camera which I am sure will be fantastic but I would prefer not to have that slightly sour taste that may be lingering with actually trying use it...

Simply not true. The 8gb cards are Lexars 300x, and they work fine. My original cards were lost by some stupid DIT and I had to buy again very quickly, and bought Lexars 300x and they work fine (were als cheaper). I have shot 20 days with it so far, and no problems, speedramps , 2k 113 fps etc. everything works like a charm. The 8GB red cards are lexars, nothing more , nothing less.
Now the 16GB are different, and yes indeed Red is the only manufacturer of these cards.

mick,

good to know that the lexar 8Gb work. Are you using build 16? I had read earlier posts that the lexar 8Gb work but that was with previous builds. The implication is that with build 16 things have changed. It would be good if someone with a camera can test other cards somehow. When I get mine I will try to set that up but it will be a few months yet... Another card I have found is the Delkin 16Gb.

There are also some 32Gb on the horizon which I would hope to test when I am in a position to do it ....

I am shooting build 16 latest version. Other cards than the Lexars won't work, period. It has nothing to do with 300x or more, other cards will start to fail when they fill up, because they will slow down when filling up.(don't ask me why, thats is too technical for me) , the 300x lexars, and the new red 16GB cards (which are faster than the 8gb lexars/red cards) won't.

thanks for the info. Delkin make this claim on their site:
"Delkin’s CompactFlash Pro UDMA enabled cards deliver industry-leading read/write speeds with a minimum sustained transfer speed of 305x (45MB/sec)." That would suggest it is fast enough and can handle the write problems that appear when cards start to fill up. In any event my camera should be with me in October and I will try to arrange a test with them (and any others available by then) and will post the results - if someone hasn't done so by then...

thanks again

There are still only three cards that pass the required sustained record speed test -

Lexar 300x 8GB, RED 8GB and RED 16GB.

Well, I hope for next builds beyond B16, as well... Right?

Any word on how that A-Data card turned out?

Also, have either of these been tried?

Also, I have yet to find this at a shopping site, but it looks interesting... Silicon Power 32GB (45MB/S)

I've tried both Sandisk Extreme IV 8GB (you wrote 16MB !) and Sandisk Ducati edition 8GB with no luck !

Cheers,
Damien

Sorry, I meant 16GB rather than 16MB. I was hoping the 16GB versions would transfer data more quickly than their smaller, older 8GB cousins.

Has anyone tried really slow shutter speeds with the slower compact flash cards? One frame per second type scenarios for time lapse? Or will the camera simply deny the card regardless of the data volumes being output?

How about this card? Link

Listed specs are 90MB/S read and 55MB/S write. Pricing seems to be very similar to the 16GB RED offering, but if you need to get a certain shot and you can't get your hands on a RED 16GB card.....?

Cheers, Wolf

Listed specs are 90MB/S read and 55MB/S write

The specs say "up to 90 MB/s"

This could mean that the cards write the first block of data at 90MB/s and then fill the rest of the card at 0.001 MB/s.

Typically "up to" cards do not deliver a consistently fast speed the whole time.

If a card were to work with Red, it would need to advertise and deliver a sustained write speed of about 40 MB/s.
