  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

is anyone else having this problem & is there a solution in 15mm studio....?
I'm running 15mm ET/Arri base and 15mm ET rods......Now obviously i cant run any of the RED 19mm universal mounts, to mount the cradle or the quick plates etc.....i know i can mount these cradles plates etc off the top mount, but i really want to be able to use the rods as mounting points....
Has anyone seen or does anyone make a 15mm studio universal mount/bridge adapter for RED......? i know Ugrip make a 15mm lightweight bridge adapter, but i want 15mm studio spacing.....help...!
thanks
Paul

The Arri light weight lens support is way too expensive ... there must be an alternative. Does anyone know what it is ??

Serious Gear has a nice one for 15mm lightweight and Zacuto has solutions that work for 15 lightweight, 15 studio and 19. See seriousgear.com & zacuto.com.

andrew....
The JEEP from zacuto won't do what i need, and i do have a few of the ET top mounts, but they don't have the larger diameter thread like the RED universal mount, they are ok for the RED quick plate, but no heavy duty enough for the full drive & battery cradle.......

I was going to say that Ugrip make them, but they're on back-order now for several weeks and they don't have any larger diameter (3/8") mounting holes on them either.

...I was set to have some 15mm u-mounts made a couple months back. I didn't because there were supposedly options, yet none of these options have materialized. Perhaps I should've done it. Oh well. Maybe I'll take another look at it over the next few days and try again.

ET's mount sounds really nice, but it will be more expensive than a simple universal mount and I don't know where it is in their pipeline. I haven't talked to Stephen about it since NAB.

For 15mm lightweight, such adapters are easy to come by. But for 15mm offset (studio) it's like no one makes them, which is really weird.

I would be very interested in a 15mm universal mount version.

What about this one?

SIModified Toe Piece
Works with Arri spaced light weight rods, studio configuration, as well as all Arri Dovetail Plates.
Weight: 18.25 oz / 530 g

You can't mount the RED CRADLE on it, I think.

Also, it must costs a lot. Just as the ET top mount ($290). These are pieces of equipment that are designed for something else, therefore are expensive. No reason to buy an overkill unit only to use it as a simple adapter.

What we need is a universal adapter similar to the RED one, but made for the 15mm studio system, and for the same price more or less: $125

I don't think it would be so hard for someone to make them.

Yeah, that SIM piece isn't it... It's a 15mm toe plate, with an integrated adapter to mount 15mm lightweight rods. The piece that's the missing link here is a replacement for the RED Universal Mount that will mount to 15mm offset rods, not 15mm lightweight.

The ET top mount is really the only option right now, but I haven't tried it personally and like has been said more than once, it's expensive and is really made for a different purpose.

More on this in a bit... I'm meeting my machine shop guys this afternoon. :)

Jeff,

If you could make the 15mm version of the adapter after all, that would be amazing. Count me in as your first customer (after you, of course).

Working on it guys... With the holiday next week, I don't know how much will get accomplished, but I'll keep you guys posted.

Thanks Jeff for looking into it.

Much appreciated.

i'm sure if you got a 1000 of those made up they'd be gone in a few days......!
i'll buy a handful for starters...!

OK, things are progressing a bit... I'm tweaking this a bit, trying to incorporate a rod-clamping design so the mount can be added or removed without sliding other gear off your rods.

My bridge mount will have both 1/4" and 3/8" mounting holes like the RED mount. It will have 3/8" and 1/4" located in line with optical center of the camera and at the 17.25mm offset (centered in relation to the 15mm rods) position. Additional 1/4" positions to match spacing on the current RED U-Mount. Top surface of mount will remain in the same vertical position in relation to optical center as the RED U-Mount.

First prototype by end of next week (July 11) if all goes well. If the clamping design works out and everything falls into place as I am hoping, I'll probably proceed with a 19mm version as well since I'd love to have one that I can drop into a setup without sliding other mounts and crap off first.

Yep, that's there Brook, the 3/8" holes I've mentioned above -- one at optical center and one offset 17.25mm, centered between the rods. Both are pass-through 3/8"-16.

The reason for the two is so there's one under optical center for lens supports and other gear with similar mounting needs. The other 3/8"-16 threaded hole is centered between the two rods, so if the mount is used top-side with the Element Technica 15mm top mounts, you get a 3/8"-16 threaded hole centered over the top of the camera.

I'll post a render once the design is finished and the prototype is getting prepped.
