Hi,

What do I need to adapt my follow focus and my matte box working with 15mm steel rod ?

Do I need to buy only the "15mm adaptator" ? Or do I need the universal mount to fix it on the 19mm steel rod as well ?

In this case, what is the height between the lens and the rod ?

Thank you !

Cheers

HI i think you have 2 choices one with universal 15mm arri base or
cheaper one only 15mm adapter

Get the 15mm base plate. I'm a little pissed at RED for trying to convince people 19mm is the way to go.

Because everyone I know, at least on the west coast, uses 15mm (100mm center "studio") accessories. It's almost impossible to find 19mm accessories here (Seattle) Neither of our pretty top notch rental houses had anything 19mm. Every job I have ever done (that wasn't on a Panavision) has been with 15mm stuff, no matter where I was in the US.

maybe one reason is that red sells their cams worldwide.

but with all the adapters available this issue should be no big problem

i can understand your point of view...but red has their point of view.

Since all my stuff is 15mm light weight, I have been thinking about just getting a pair of the 12" long 19mm rods to attach the universal mount/15mm adapter combo. That should work for just about everything but hand held. Of course, until I can get my hands on my camera, I'm just speculating on what will work best for me.

Got to tell you, I couldn't be happier that I have options and choices in how I want to work with my RED. Hope I don't ever have to buy another S*ny camera.

I second that!

I don't understand the 19mm thing either - I never used anything but 15mm, I and I'm from Sweden - It just adds weight (and som minor trouble) for most of the people.

Jonas,
Is that the Arri centre/offset 15mm studio mount you use in Sweden?

Dave,

ps: As opposed to 15mm lightweight rod mount which is symmetrical around the centre of the camera?

I've only ever user 15mm "lightweight", and my matte box, follow focus and other accessories are made to this standard. I have never seen anyone use 19mm, in Norway. I had never heard of 19mm before Red began talking about it.

If you look at the matte boxes that are being sold, I think you'll find that most all of them are 15mm, maybe a few will offer 19mm option. This leads me to believe that 15mm is the standard, and 19mm is just being difficult.

Historically 15mm Lightweight was for 16mm cams like the SR's and AAtons. 15mm studio was for 35mm (3c's, III's, 435, etc)

Arri started pushing 19mm as the new standard. Problem is no one has the gear for it, and rental houses refused to replace all their stuff. It's just dumb, and in my mind doesn't offer any major advantage over 15mm studio, other than the fact it's lens axis centered. It's not that much stronger, it's heavier, and it's hard to find accessories in in a pinch.

I've never had issues with 19mm, and actually prefer it unless I am handheld. My 3 primary Rental Houses all have 19mm accessories, and all the Arri gear I owned (FF4, MB4, MB5) prior to red all support 19mm.

Why dont you get the 15mm base?

Looks like the handles in those photos are mounted to the 19mm rods. If you used the 15mm base, the handles won't fit. Or am I missing something?
