  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

13th responses here...

Well, now, we small game shall have to get used to deal with what we have feared.. the camera we needed and we were confident enough to buy right away will not come out of an upgraded red one, but out of cameras I'm personally not willing to purchase. Some of us have been guilty for dreaming, trusting, and trying hard not to expect the worse. Very naive... Bad attitude, you said ? Hope Jim will not suffer a breakdown from my ingratitude...

I'm not Jim, but I really don't think he would count you out as a bad attitude from this post.

Jim has already promised to upgrade you guys to the new sensor, so I'm not sure where this complaining is coming from. For your personal filmmaking, I don't see RED ONE as being functionally obsolete for many years to come. I don't see exhibitors demanding the incredibly high resolutions mentioned by RED. Heck, I don't know if it's even physically possible at this time to save a 28K image at 25fps to any known recording medium!

The legitimate problem would be that if you wanted to support your RED ONE through the rental market, that is bound to diminish once these new cameras are in widespread availability. But relax. This isn't going to happen for at least a year, and even then I would expect people to still want to rent RED ONEs, albiet at lower prices.

The real problem here is that technology marches on, and it's only practical to go so far in upgrading old technology to match the new. Even with the new modular system, upgrading requires the purchase of new lenses, because the S35 lenses are not going to work with the new FF35 systems.

Let's say Jim has made obsolescence more obsolete than any other make of camera, and that's an impressive achievement on its own. But to ask him to stop technological progress on behalf of RED ONE owners seems realistic. Moving forward is in his DNA.

And really, I suspect in the future you will be the beneficiary of this again. Even if you decide to never buy another RED again, this competition is eventually going to require answers from Canon, Sony and others.

I think a lot of Red One owners, myself included, are just trying to come to terms with where we're at here. There is a LOT of information to digest and we are trying to work out what's happened to the value of our very recent investments.

There are various accusations of "bad attitude" floating around here, mostly made by people who are NOT Red owners toward those of us who have paid our cash and put our faith in Jim and the team at Red.

I'm not at all angry at Jim at all, I just want to get a clear idea of where the Red One camera now stands in the Red "pecking order" and get a clear idea of our future upgrade path.

What Red have achieved to date is incredible but right now I'm unclear about the options available to us.

After reviewing all the 200+ pages of what seems to be an unstoppable stream of comments, I’ve come to the conclusion that the fowling things are true;

The NEW concept of the Red Epic Master Professional, and the Scarlet Professional are a step into the future, therefore sometimes we hear the cries of growing pains. BUT, like all growing pains, they eventually will stop, and we move on.

I must say, and say it again, the designed has something for everyone, everyone! The Red Team went beyond the frontiers of outer space, into unchartered territory.
Whatever you imagined the purposed of the Red Epic Master Professional, and the Scarlet Professional, there is something for you in there, there are multiple cameras and combination thereof for any conceivable purpose. As it was put forward by the Red Team, there are 2,251,799,813,685,248 combinations that can be constructed. You might need one or two or any combination thereof, there are more combination, than people on Earth. There is two and one quarter Quadrillions! I’m not even sure that’s a word, but-if-it-is, that’s the word.

So look beyond what other people will have, or not have, and ask yourself; what do I need? It’s there? I personally think that you will find that it there!

I agree. Red listened to all the things we asked for and more. They put it into a broader range of cameras so we can get more cameras or make the cameras more accessible.

It's great that I can buy a Scarlet and use it as a backup camera to my R1 or when I upgrade to Epic and everything is compatible.

Or I can buy two Scarlets where before I could only buy one R1. Sure it doesn't do everything but thats why i'm keeping my R1.

who asks anyone to stop progress ?

Not me.. question is : what's your definition of technological progress ? It's all to easy to figure out people like you are, and jim often has.. he's in charge of keeping both ends together : the future, and the present, I guess

Give a man an inch and he'll take a mile.

The RED ONE was certainly (and still is) groundbreaking. Would you rather the design of the EPIC and SCARLET be handicapped so as to not offend? Or - just like every piece of technology - expect it to change over time for the better?

I'm so sick of hearing shit like this from newbs! You should of put your money where your mouth is 2 years ago and see how you would of accepted the news. Until then go back to the scarlet forum.

Reservation holders have been around from day one and seen the R1 develop. For others to have all of sudden jump in and start explaining technology, this is not nothing new to me and I'm sure others here. Obviously Jim and the team found a way to interchange lenses on the Scarlet and thats cool. But what about my invest now? I need to kick out more money for an upgrade or sit back and watch the Scarlet take over.

By the time Epic comes out Red One will be roughly two years old. With the speed the technology industry advances it'd be unrealistic to expect Red not to bring out better products or hobble new products to keep existing owners happy. This is kind of what holds Sony & Panasonic back and allows Red a niche to get a foot in the door. Does everyone really expect Red to start following their example? If they did someone else would just come in and fill the feature/performance/price gap.

2,251,799,813,685,248 possibilities?

Or elsewhere in the announcement "over a trillion..."

Or from what has been announced so far:
# brains 7
EVF/monitors 5
handle yes/no 2
lens mounts 4
I/O module yes/no 2
battery options 3
recording modules 7
REDmote yes/no 2

7*5*2*4*2*3*7*2 = 23,520

Hmmm. 3 very different figures.

If you have four rods.. 23,520*4 :)

Don't forget that 3D rig.

Do you put the older camera on the left, or on the right?

How far apart? Will that be 1.2 mm, 1.21 mm, 1.22 mm, ...

Great, great products!! BUT, for me, the only one I can afford is the old dear Scarlet 1.0, which now has the same specs, costs more and will delivery not early 2009, like before, but fall 2008.... Am I wrong?

Has anyone clarified if the s35 scarlet will be able to shoot more then 30fps? Or you can shoot at lower resolution?

From what I've been reading: No -- it will be locked at 30fps, even if you use different resolutions.

Please... somebody correct me if there is proof otherwise. I'm hoping that I'm wrong.

Dang this is annoying... Max 30fps, means MAX.

I know for 100 percent certainity based on all the shit talking Jim was doing about about the 5d that you will be able to shoot some different frame rates that are 30fps or less. It is going to have 24, 25 etc. It may only have 24, 25, 30 and if this is all locked at 5k...instant deal breaker they have also just left the door wide open for Canon to come in and slap down some big guns.

I mentioned it in another thread, but I have no use for anything over 2k. Sure it will look great, but with my current setup and most projects going to SD dvd, web or SD t.v, shooting 5k is useless. Then some people argue that it makes better images for the big screen.... well the panavision genesis outputs 1080p and it looks just fine. Granted there is room for improvement and it would be nice to have the option there for future proofing, you know making obsolences obsolete but forcing everyone to only shoot 5k is madness. Ended up a long way from out of the box 3k for 3k.

You guys should know better by now. Red One came out better than what it was announced and has been developed only for the better, right? :matrix:
