  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I don't think new cusomers will pay $17,500 for a Red One Body with Epic and Scarlet on offer.

I'm sure you'll honour your commitment to keep Red One's up and running but I think most people now feel they have just bought into an old product line which has effectively been superceeded both in design and performance only months after it's release.

I just thought you'd look after us small guys a bit more.

I sustain that.. "we" feel somewhat cheated here.. It's great we helped you to learn ho to become a great company, I guess...

The more I look at this, the less I'm liking what I see. If I was not a Red One owner I'd be delighted, but having spent our very hard earned cash, I'm feeling a little down about everything right now.

What I want to hear from Jim is that I can have my Red One upgraded with the latest technology i.e. the Monstro sensor and if this can be done what the cost will be.

I've spent a LOT on accesories for my Red One and don't want to lose out on my investment.

I'll be honest here, right now I'm seriously wonderring if we made the right decision going with Red. :waaa:

Jim, you've effectively killed your Red One camera and I can say with certainty that between now and the release of the new range your sales of Red One's will be very small.

We cannot justify the upgrade costs to Epic right now even with your trade in offer so the ONLY option for us is a sensor upgrade for our Red One or we cut our lossess and jump ship!

Battery module with dual slots. Seems to allow for swapping batteries without having to power down the rig.

But is hot swapping really necessary? If the camera will boot in 2 seconds then what's the point of a hot swap 95% of the time? We've never had how swap with previous video cameras without the dual adapter or special batteries like the IDX stack batteries.

Give a man an inch and he'll take a mile.

The RED ONE was certainly (and still is) groundbreaking. Would you rather the design of the EPIC and SCARLET be handicapped so as to not offend? Or - just like every piece of technology - expect it to change over time for the better?

Lots of people asked for it on the R1, albeit with the significantly longer boot time.

I suspect that having to power down at all for many things, especially in run-n-gun situation is a pain.

REDCODE42 and windowed mode

REDCODE42 and windowed mode

We already know that we can use Scarlet FF35 with PL lenses in windowed mode. Since we will use less pixels of the sensor - less data, does this mean that using the same compression ratio that REDCODE42 uses we will gain slightly better picture quality? Just a thought...

Scott,
I think what hurts is not Red related, but the growing pains of the digital revolution. We have to reach a plateau for technology to slow down. It isn't Red, but the basic nature of what our generation is doing.
I think the only thing that can provide that plateau is distribution. We have 35mm and 2k projectors in theaters. So the maximum resolution that can be distributed is what 35mm can hold... if you want to make sure your camera doesn't depreciate then you might have to juggle or do some other tricks cause it is all changing. But perhaps once we can create enough resolution to saturate those 35mm prints with the best image they can hold... then it might stop... till theaters want more. Till we reach resolution beyond what the human eye can see? Till our eyes evolve or we get bionic implants?
This is a growth spurt decade for digital...

And, again... you are going to be taken care of! You get your full money, no depreciation! $17,500! Scarlet FF35 is cheaper than that!!! Do you not like the name? It will have Monstro, 13 stops, 6k... all bigger numbers than you have now... OR, you can upgrade your sensor to Mostro and keep the original Red One body with the beast inside!

You can't stop the world, and it keeps going with or without us. Be happy that you have Red One, I wish I had one... :sarcasm:

Yes, will we get a bit better quality? I suppose the answer is yes since the recorded image will only be the S35 section, right? Perfect world scenario!

Last time I checked Jim said that you could upgrade the R1. Not really sure what the problem is at the moment with tons of people complaining about something that has already been addressed.

You should, by now, realize Jim and the Red team are not out to leave anyone behind. And you being a R1 owner should know that before anyone else. It might be worth you time, about 3 hours to go through and read this whole post and then possibly go next door where Jim posted the differences and some clarification on the the cameras.

I am starting to think that the R1 owners don't like not having the latest and greatest if they can't afford the camera with the spiffier name... R1 only shot 30fps in 4k... there is NO steps back for them and their $17,500 which will get them what they had and more.

I do think that it might be in someone's best interest to keep the R1 body since it might prove that you've been working with Red longer than others... and you can upgrade them! I dunno... I would probably want to keep my R1 forever and one day have my great grand son sell it for a trillion dollars as a collectible. :D

I wonder if this is not what's called " a bad attitude"... First announcement of Epic + scarlet shook my confidence... The nice bargain about the red one, the price itself seemed to get a "normal" explanation at once...Yesterday announcement, after expectations being raised the way they were raised, made me very sad... more new products, with the red one still under development, more promises and more appealing to a better future.

And the red one I bought pushed so much aside that I'm offered to trade it for another camera :-(

Well, now, we small game shall have to get used to deal with what we have feared.. the camera we needed and we were confident enough to buy right away will not come out of an upgraded red one, but out of cameras I'm personally not willing to purchase. Some of us have been guilty for dreaming, trusting, and trying hard not to expect the worse. Very naive... Bad attitude, you said ? Hope Jim will not suffer a breakdown from my ingratitude...

Nah, they'll probably still be selling them then, so not much of a uniqueness to warrant the price jump...

:meh:

R1 will be the first camera of the company that will end up ruling the market... no more Sony, no more Panavision, the only one spared will be Panasonic thanks to Jared putting in a good word to spare their life.

I am really hoping we get an answer to this question, just to have the official nod on what just about all of us are hoping for.

Okay. So let me understand this. If I have a set of 35MM Zeiss PL lenses, then I can't ever use them with a Monstro sensor? Yikes.

Scarlet will make 30 FPS maximum no matter what. According to what they say it is "chip limitation". So Scarlet users will rent Epic for slow motion or use optical flow technology.

EDIT:
2/3" Scarlet will have a "burst mode" - maybe this stands behind 120 FPS.

Burst mode? Why did you have to say burst mode?
