  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

13th responses here...

Yeah, that 617...

261 MP is a BIG deal. The highest rez I'm seeing on a 'blad right now is 50 MP -- that's nothing to be sneezed at either, but this is 5 times the rez of a high-end 'blad...

That's big. REALLY big.

I must say I'm not totally falling out of my seat, my jaw is still firmly attached... I kinda saw this coming back in Oct.. so I'm more relieved and happy that my suspicions came true...

now when can we see some footage of the 2/3" imager?? :)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Buyer beware !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate to be the kill joy here, but you guys need to slow down and start thinking this stuff through. There isn't a week that goes by that I don't get a call or an email, from a Red One owner who wants to sell his gear to me. Don't get me wrong I'm excited about the future of Red, just like the rest of you.

These new systems are going to be a considerable investment, and in the next 2 to 4 years the economy is not going to be the greatest. So you guys need to do a serious check-up from the neck-up, so think before you leap.

The Epic FF35 is a prime example, I battle the perceptions the film industry have about Red all the time. DP's want to use the glass they know and trust. You and I know that the glass that Red is going to come out with is going to be great, I sure of that, but it is going to take years for Red class to be excepted as being on par with what the feature film industry know and love... It's bullshit, but it's the truth. The DP is going to want the dynamic range and the 6K real estate, but he will want it with his Super Speeds. I just don't see how that's going to be possible... So keep that in mind while you're looking at your new business model. It's so very easy to get caught in the buzz and excitement, and start writing a check. You finally get it, and then either there is not enough work or it's so cut throat that you have to take it in the tail pipe if you have any chance at any kind of ROI...

For me it's a no brainer, but I'm in the content business. I'm not in the gypsy camera guy rental business. So as I said buyer beware.

Just a few observation from your Uncle Adobeone

I don't get the fretting about lens mounts. Is everyone seriously going to buy those top end cameras? If anything, the fixed-lens Scarlet will be the most appealing to the most people -- you know that you'll be getting a brain and lens that work flawlessly together, and you know you'll be getting a better price than buying everything separately, and you know you'll be getting some great images out of a 2/3" mysterium sensor! And if that doesn't do it for you, the lowest end Epic will probably be so good that you'll never bother with 35mm film again. And everyone's worried about PL mounts on top-end Epics? No offense, but that almost seems besides the point to me.

FF Scarlet is a vista vision size sensor for what $12k , thats pretty incredible, if red can knock out great lenses to go with it , the next epics could be shot on that

My first thoughts on a 617 based camera is “no depth of field, at all…” so only a choice for the hardcore landscape photographer (like me!) who wants to shoot footage (we are talking at least 3 f-stops more for an equivalent 35mm depth of field). However, assuming you can get the ASA cranked up (Nikon are currently doing ASA6400), with 28k to play with (can’t believe I’ve just written “28k”…) scaling down to a “mere” 4k is still going to produce incredible, grain free images. An with Linhof quality optics?

Can you stack multiple I/O modules to get additional XLR channels?

That would be nice...

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a pre-packaged "starter kit" that included a basic camera and minimally needed accessories, ready-to-go...

Well, that makes sense, but does it really? Doing simple speculative math, if you look at the S35 Scarlet, which is $7K for the brain, this is the unit that most closely resembles the RedOne, save for an extra 1K of resolution and the REDCODE 42 instead of 36. Other than that, they are close to identical. Now, if Jim & Co. don't want to "infuriate" existing R1 customers (and God knows they have the right to do as they please with their own product), or rather thread diplomatically on their turf, this version should be priced comparatively to R1, which means that the rest of the modular accessories that are a NECCESSITY to allow the camera to function should retail for around $10.5K to make the brain + accessories combo ~ $17.5K. Which means that a bare bones kit is about $10.5K, making the 2/3 sensor Scarlet $13K (still WAY better than similar size options from Sony and Panasonic) but making the "lower" end of the Red lineup not so much so. The true bargains are to be had at the higher end of the scale, but unless you're happy with the specs of the fixed lens and price of the entry level Scarlet, that's where the entry level deal really ends...

They are definitely going to let the remote be able to control anything, if not at release it will most definitely be added in a later update.

I say we lock Jannard and Jobs in a shed for a week with a fair supply of weed and I'm sure they will come out with an ingenious solution to the economic crisis!

What sort of data rates will RC 225 at 5K going to put out at 24fps....100fps???
anybody?

And BTW....on a couple of the renderings there is what appears to be a 10-40 mm zoom, either S35 or FF35, didn't anybody else notice that? I don't see it on the announced lenses, but that would CERTAINLY be a lens I'd pay anything for....

One question that keeps popping up and that I would like to know the answer too, is whether or not the S35 can up it's frame rate by dropping resolution. "trade off frame size against increased framerate" does seem to suggest that it will be possible. Guess there is plenty of time to have that one answered though.

WELEASE......BWAIN!

Sorry to be a hog but...... RED TEAM look at the CURRENT active list today...this is the RED VERSION of the RED CHRISTMAS TREE!! Incredible. I'll get out of everyone's way now! (I'm just happy that's all!)
