  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

13th responses here...

Two quick questions:
1) Will the Canon/Nikon mounts control the lens' internal focus motors?

my guess is that will be available via third party lens mount, maybe canon/nikon will make it for red

did anybody see the sensor plane mark/witness mark on the brain box? i can't find it. does it mean we can adjust the sensor plane? or is it like what happen with earlier red one cam?

redmote looks cool , specially if you can program it to do things like ramping

I wonder if it can be programmed to control a TV or a VCR...

Hmm...

Can I use it as a presentation controller for a MacBook?

I suppose all components wont be swappable.
You cant take a Lens mount from the scarlet (i.e., S35) and use it on your Epic. (The size is different of the plate.)

But thats neither here nor there...Im sure the rest will work out fine. :)

Not quite understanding the bit about the PL mount, as it appears RED does/will make PL mount lenses. (it would seem that a PL mount would be a natural option for all the cameras.)

Peace

dAlen

p.s. - that Scarlett S35 is looking quite nice. (Nice Red replacement.)

The new Scarlet/Epic are un. be. lievable. Thank you Jim & RED Team for what will be considered your "1984"... amazing work. I am going through all of the possibilities now... I am speechless...

So just to score my earlier analysis:

Speculation:
1. Swappable sensors are part of the modularity?
2. Ground breaking dynamic range on the new sensors?
3. Better than expected resolution for the new sensors?
4. Autofocus? (Seems like this would be needed to compete with DSLR's... impact on motion pictures could be substantial... no more need for external motors?)
5. Update on RedRay?
6. Update on 4K projection?
7. More workflow updates (not that Adobe support isn't huge by itself)?
8. Lots more accessories (part of the new modular system)?

#1 - Yes! Swappable sensors are definitely there.
#2 - Yes! Dynamic range definitely sets some new standards.
#3 - Yes! "Better than expected" is an understatement.
#4 - Yes! (They didn't explicitly say autofocus, but the lenses say AF, so you know it's there)
#5 - No news on RedRay. Clearly there's change in the wind to support the new resolutions, but no news as yet.
#6 - No news on projection. Seems like this is either being left to others to create, or the Red plans are too long term to talk about.
#7 - No additional news on workflow. Clearly there will have to be workflow enhancements to support the new resolutions though; perhaps this will wind up being part of the Adobe integration, since Premiere is supposedly open-ended for resolution.
#8 - Yes; lots of new accessories were visible -- some officially announced, some not.

Big Surprises:
  1. The extent of the modularity - We thought Scarlet/Epic would each be one camera. It turns out that they are each just one class of sensor and electronics, with various resolution options. Configs for DSLR, hand-held video, cinema, and 3D were shown, with seemingly endless variations possible. Definitely a game changer in terms of letting one product line overlap multiple markets; probably also a game-changer in terms of facilitating new applications not already catered to (I'm sure lots of creativity will be exercised by end-users, putting all the modularity to work).
  2. Resolution and sensor size; the numbers listed are astounding. Clearly this is a game-changer, even though it raises many lens, work-flow and display questions that will need to be answered.
  3. Pricing; generally lower than expected (though full package prices are speculation at this point). Likely to kill competitors in the digital cinema market (making this a game changer for pro cinema). Scarlet becomes the new RedOne, and seemingly at an even lower price-point, which creates another game changer for independent film makers. It's unclear how accessible the DSLR configuration will be to prosumer market; I suspect it will be aimed more at the top-of-the line Nikon/Canon price-point, but its capabilities so far exceed Nikon/Canon that this should be a game changer for still photography as well.
  4. Wireless streaming as an option for recording; no more strapping media on the camera if there is a RAID in WiFi range. I don't know how well the bandwidth/reliability is going to work out, but if it's solid, it would absolutely be a game changer.
  5. 3D; amazing to be able to do it in a pre-conceived configuration; wish there was a better way to display it... how's that holographic projector coming along, Jim? :) Either way, making high quality 3D easy/inexpensive is a game changer.

Little Surprises:
  1. 1080p viewfinder; excellent! Of course, now we're going to want one that supports 28k... or 4K at least? :)
  2. Remote control; this in combination with autofocus seems like it could mean remote pulling, and perhaps even remote zoom/remote iris?
  3. New Red mount; no word (that I saw) on what the motivation for this was, but the most likely explanation is that it will provide some new capabilities that couldn't be serviced with the existing mount choices.

I'm certain there are more noteworthy points that I missed, but this thread is WAY too long to read through, and I'm sleepy thanks to Jim and the Red Team keeping us all up late. Again, congratulations to Red for shaking everything up so successfully... this was definitely more than just hype.

Best,
Tim

FF35 Worries

FF35 Worries

FF35. So Cinema 35mm pl lenses won't cover that area? What about anamorphic lenses? It seems the full frame size and ratio would be perfect for anamorphic lenses. I agree with many posts about wanting that extra bit depth and latitude, even if it means not using the entire frame.

Step away Steve Jobs, there's a new visionary in the Planet...

Steve is cool. :)
Seriously though, he would perhaps benefit from listening more to the end user...as an artist would still like a pen and a tablet computer. (19" laptop to draw on.) But when we get something it will be a finger painting device. (Dont get me wrong, loved it as a kid, but sometimes options are nice.) :)

Red seems to have done a descent job with giving the options without making it look like it came from Redmond...all in a mess. (Sorry Bill, there is a place for everyone...sometimes we just have to enjoy what others make.) :)

This concept of making a bare 'brain' and packaging around it is a novel idea.
A good way to make money, yet at the same time not a bad option for the end user.

Imagine as technology moves on...you get a 'brain' and you get to develop a robotic body around it. (i.e. around your own brain.) ;)

Peace

Planet, I'm almost certain you'll be proven wrong that the S35 will be the most popular Epic. I'd bet a lot of money it will be the FF35. Why? I think everyone will want to jump on to get the two additional stops of dynamic range AND the 16 bit AD conversion. You can always crop a FF35 down for size, but you can't crop dynamic range or a better AD.Stephen

I missed that there was a difference in dynamic range. Well, as the adage goes "everything changes" - hopefully this will too.

Jim,

When you told us that this announcement was going to be even bigger than anything you've done so far, I was racking my brain trying to figure out what you could do with Epic and Scarlet to make it so..

You have surpassed even my wildest most ridiculously unrealistic expectations. This is your defining moment, I feel like we will all look back on this day in 10 years as the day that changed everything.

Congratulations.
Seth

bittersweet

bittersweet

Well, the camera system is phenomenal, awesome, fantastic. Will be.

However, just as with the original Scarlet announcement, there's still nothing to buy, only another year of waiting...

Chris

3D!!!!!!!!!

Actually, this is an error.

It's really 4D... Length x Width x Camera x Time...

Another error is 9.4MP for the One -- that should be 10.4MP, unless my calculator did the math wrong...

The PL mount may simply not be possible with a FF35 sensor format.

Right now you can put a 16mm PL mount on a RED though it doesn't cover the sensor. You select 2K on the camera which crops the sensor and off you go. I see no reason RED would tell all their 18-85mm purchasers they can't throw that lens on a Monstro EPIC and do a little 4.5k or high frame rate shooting.

Jim, and all at RED-- my confidence is re-inspired! I think my first words were "Holy Fucking Shit!" I'm excited by the future, for sure! Now, if only RED's workflow could get the same kind of love and attention.

Speaking of Obsolete, I'm guessing that the RED "Tent" for NAB is going to be obsolete. My prediction is that NAB will be renamed "RED", and that RED will have the entire Lower, South Hall in order to accommodate all these new accessories, bodies, and people... never mind the space needed for the 617 and its unimaginable lenses!

Also, what are the chances that some of these accessories will be available before the cameras? I want that shoulder pad tomorrow....

I honestly can not pick my jaw off the floor. I was truely baffled looking at the first renders, one of which I thought was the real thing. I stayed up til 3 this morning looking at the render updates. But this morning I was in complete shock to see all of the variasions that were possible. The swapable lens mount, the varing sensors, and still you will even deliver on the fixed lens Scarlet,
THE RED TEAM IS TRUELY REVOLUTIONARY.
