  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

13th responses here...

As a rabid Apple fan, I must say that Red uses a radically different approach to communicating with its community than Apple does... and yet I love it.

Hmmm...
Not sure that the words "Apple" and "communicating" go together. ;)
(Dont get me wrong, I still pick Apple over the rest...but they are loosing that shine they used to have.)

Peace

yeah, well that's great Adobe but I work in post and nobody uses your products. Final Cut/Avid support or bust!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Apple rose to NLE prominence when they were the first to have a clear, inexpensive DVCPro workflow by working closely with Panasonic while all the other NLE's slept on the technology.

Adobe is about to do the exact same thing with RedCode support. It might be time to switch again fellas.

Unless the depth of the lenses results in damage to the sensor.

That's why it's not safe to mount EF-S lenses on a 1D series cam for example...

More likely (and interesting) is the possibility of using the larger-format mounts on the smaller cams...

Consider: a DOF adaptor that is itself a mount, rather than one that attaches to a lens...

Unless I'm being dense Canon and Nikon have a shorter FFD than PL so damage shouldn't be a problem?

Is this the end of zoom lenses and moving the camera in for close-ups? Just place the cam far away from the action and just crop out what you want in post-op :p

No. Zooming in on a lens's optical resolution has it's limits, though I've discussed with post guys with whom this doesn't register as a factor.

By the way, just wanted to say thank you to Red for the hard work backing this thrilling announcement. I, for one, can envision all my low budget filmmaking needs being met by the fixed lens Scarlet. I'm curious how much it will cost in the most minimal usable configuration possible.

I was similar to you in thought, until only about a few months ago.
Apple doesnt seem to be progressing - of course it could be they surprise us all next year and release the replacement to Shake, and update the Suite, etc.

But now we know from Steves own mouth - the macbook was the best selling computer, and now they aim to get the consumers to buy the macbook pro - (or the advanced media enthusiast computer.) After all, thats where the money is.

I saw Adobes CS4, and to be honest, was quite impressed.
Before CS4 there is no way I would have considered their editing suite...and now add tight RED and Adobe integration - its a no brainer for me, get Adobe and Red. (Of course I will wait till some of this stuff is out to give Apple a chance to see how much Steve still cares about the pro market.) :)

That's what I'm thinking, with 28k get your wide, medium and closeup in one take. Crop in and reframe. I can't wait to see how 28k footage will key.

I know that the sheer volume and the technology implied in these announcements is mind-boggling, and this certainly looks like a defining moment for cinematography. Yet the original vision of the Scarlet, i.e. a $3,000 (semi)pro camera that works out of the box is pretty much MIA right now.

The price for that camera isn't listed as of yet so how can you say that? I'm guessing it still comes in at around $3,000

Two quick questions:
1) Will the Canon/Nikon mounts control the lens' internal focus motors?
2) Is there a remote operation solution? (Not just a start/stop button, I'd like to control the camera from a laptop)

if it will.. wow red has done it 99.9999% right ! Im hoping it will. there's one of its accessories which allows the use of lens mounts. Have a look on that. Im pretty sure red will blast us more ! dang those cams looks like some military weapons. Website's lookin hardcorish darkish cool !

I know there's already a thread on "Fly by REDwire," but I'm also wondering how else is that brain different from the $2,500 option? I also know it comes with glass, duh. So that will be it? Any idea why the box is taller?

By the way, I have been viewing this thread for most part of the day.
Saw it as Jim was posting the info and pics.

Congrats to you Jim and your team.
Nice line up you have...

Some thoughts to the rest:

- The DSLR killer is that big 256mp camera (did I get the pixel count right?)
It seems they are going after the medium format end...price wise they beat out Hasselblad for megapixel count...not to mention it does video as well. We will have to see what Hassey has out then.)

- About an affordable Scarlet...looks like they left it.
Notice the price is in ascending order - though no price is given, i would imagine the fixed lens scarlet will be cheaper than the 2.5k one.
- Besides, you can always upgrade that lens mount later if you need...from what the brochure shows. ;)

So, overall...nice.
As others pointed out, be nice if Apple steps up to the Pro plate - but if not, go Adobe. (But thats software, still cant imagine migrating to any version of windows...never liked it.)

you think so? I'm thinking more like $4000 (still an amazing deal)

I'd say 3K~ish... RED's initial plan was to offer a out of the box cam which is ready to shoot ar 3k for 3k which hopefully is still the case.
