  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

13th responses here...

Any chance that a future brain might support an optical viewfinder?

That would be sweet and finally make this usable for still work too...

Just wonderful!

In fact, thinking afterwards we could/should have guessed what's coming. Jim told us that the new design will meet all the wishes each of us have posted. Of course, he was hinting modularity is the answer! As he explained, the design team first thought the users are asking for things which are impossible to make into a single camerea. And I can almost see, that when the design team were shaking their heads and chatting on the impossible wish list given by the users, somebody suddenly stood up and said: hold on guys, what about if we made a modular system. Brilliant idea, have to say (... "and the rest is history as they say") without forgetting the amazing option of 28K.

If I may make raise a question, that would be: In the line of modular units there seems to be hole in which the unmodular Red One fits into almost perfectly. Could this be changed?

The reasoning behind this strategy is obvious as evidently there is a need to satisfy the already rather large group of existing Red One owners (which, including me, would find the investment less valuable if the modular line included the 4K option). Still, not sure I'm completely happy with this decision. A modular system with 4K resolution, up to 120fps, 13 stops or higher dynamics and universal mount (at least Canon + Nikon) would still be a better tool for my needs (wildlife filming) than Red One ; less mass, less space, wireless control and so on. I find 120fps a must, 3K bit too low and 5K already bit like an overkill, and in the sense 4K is ideal.

Hopefully nobody feels I'm spoiling the party. No, that's not at allmy intention. Just my 2 cents at the moment when realizing the camera industry will now have a historical change, and it's a good one! I'll find my version among the 2,251,799,685,248 possibilities.

Good morning one & all,

We've been cranking out code with the RED team, lining up for the same schedule.
Next week we'll ship a full native workflow for RED in Premiere Pro CS4, After Effects CS4 and even Encore CS4 (the RED to Blu workflow).

We've come a long way since the IBC demos --- more performance, more stability, more options, and tuning it to CS4 which is architected for 64 bit systems so that you can stuff it full of memory and get that smooth as butter experience.

Import your R3D files, change resolution on the fly, pop into full resolution for some detail work, drop all the way down to 1/16th for fast cuts on a laptop --- it's all there.

We're right up to 2K at full performance with the latest drop.

Oh, and did I mention that we're working the RED gang on exposing more control on the realtime de-bayering ? ... and of course with Assimilate on making it a full, clean, raw end to end workflow ?

Expect the importer to be posted with RED and linked from Adobe before Thanksgiving. Nov 20th is looking like the date (not that dates ever change).

Many thanks to our beta-testers ... you've been awesome turning things around and helping us shape the future.

It's cool.

It's Christmas come early.

Enjoy.

Simon & the Merry Adobe Gang
Keeping you close to the lens

yeah, well that's great Adobe but I work in post and nobody uses your products. Final Cut/Avid support or bust!

Amazed and delighted. But I want 13+ stops, PL mount and at least 4K res , and I only want S35. Jim, I know the sheer HIGH of this must be amazing for you , but I also know that you listen. So I just thought I'd put this out there.

Likewise, all I want is 13 stops, PL mount and at least 2K res. But faster frame rates.

Even more important for me is a PC / Adobe Premiere/After Effects workflow which I can use NOW. I just can't get Redcine to work for now.

And I would like the HDMI port to work into an HDMI equiped HDTV too.

The FF35 w/o PL mount is the big crier from what I've read, but I'm sure something will materialize; or a glass-shift will be realized. A trillion options....

I don't think its anything to worry about personally. The renders show that the lens mount is removable (four torx screws) so just screw on a PL mount and crop the image in camera or in post. For all we know, a s35 Monstro may be in phase two.

Guess I went to be a few minutes too early. Spent the last hour trying to read through all of these posts.

I am happy to see that the initial upgrade path to base EPIC is a lot cheaper than what was assumed from NAB. Just wonder what the upgrade path is from S35 to FF35. As in, is there an upgrade program? The original EPIC news had Mostro as a free upgrade. Assume that is gone, just hoping the upgrade path is a trade-in + price delta. :)

When it comes to my current RAID storage, guess I am gonna need a bigger boat!

That's fine and all if you can compromise with FPS, DR and REDCODE.
What are we talking in cropped factor? 6K with PL lenses would be like 5K?

The S35 gives you MORE FPS, not less, with Epic.
The SAME FPS with Scarlet.

How does that compromise REDCODE? Les rez in the same amount of space means less compression, thus less loss of data, not more...

DR is your only concern here, but either way it's more than the One has right now, so I won't complain...

The other concern would be DOF, but the S35 matches whatever you're likely using the PL glass on now, so how is this a compromise?

S35 is also similar to what I'm getting with my Canon EOS 30D, but I won't be using any of these for still work (except maybe ocassionally to reduce # of cameras carried or whatever, or because I'm already holding one), unless they release one with an optical viewfinder.

I'll be VERY happy with a 2/3" Scarlet, would be thrilled if I could find reason to afford an S35... maybe one day...

I think I just got it.
Mysterium X will be ready first. (actually the Mysterium X S35 scarlet is the one with the earliest date of spring/summer 2009).
Red wants sales, not people waiting off for a Monstro with a PL.

I'd be really surprised if Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Panavision, Arri, Dalsa, and everyone else did not pee their pants this morning in fear.... This is absolutely amazing.

-- hahaha next thing they'll be saying meh... scammers !!! red just blew my mind off... they just blew it. I am now 100% confident sure that nikon's 20th "BIG" announcement will just be ....... :whistling: :whistling:

RED CONTINUE :gun: :gun: ing em DOWN !

just screw on a PL mount and crop the image in camera or in post.

Unless the depth of the lenses results in damage to the sensor.

That's why it's not safe to mount EF-S lenses on a 1D series cam for example...

More likely (and interesting) is the possibility of using the larger-format mounts on the smaller cams...

Consider: a DOF adaptor that is itself a mount, rather than one that attaches to a lens...

Forgive me if this has already been covered, but...

There's no price yet for the fixed-lens / 2/3" option - I'd be happy if I could get a basic system for around $3500 - i.e., fixed lens brain, one battery, one recording module, lcd or evf and of course the basic rod supports. Is this likely? This seems like a great way to get people like me, who don't yet want to spend the extra $7000 on a S35 brain, to get on the RED ladder.

Two quick questions:
1) Will the Canon/Nikon mounts control the lens' internal focus motors?
2) Is there a remote operation solution? (Not just a start/stop button, I'd like to control the camera from a laptop)

Is this the end of zoom lenses and moving the camera in for close-ups? Just place the cam far away from the action and just crop out what you want in post-op :P

Speechless. I'm on board for a Scarlet S35 and a Scarlet 2/3 AIO. Wow. Now I just hope that the module accessories aren't "$1500 for the CF module".
