  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So what is that contraption hanging on the back and side?

Looks like a RED version of the firestore, check out the "still" or "motion" switch.

He :) I think you have to get red-lenses with red-mount for 13+ stops and high frame-rates.

Please don't say that!!!

I think Jim would of had to see the marketing flaw where every RedOne owner with PL lens..(like how many are they!!) and that wished to perform a meaningful upgrade to 13 stops had to throw out there PL lens and get Jim's Redmount lens. That can't be true!!

Can't you just shoot with a cropped sensor? You'd get the same DR, and possibly be able to shoot faster frame rates...

all these posts, and no one has asked...

what the heck is the RED RISER?

I think that was the first render that Jim released on the "A taste" thread...but what function does it serve. Something mysterious and innovative, I would presume....

Ooooo yeah please tell me this is not the case. We spent everything we had to get PL glass.

Wow,what an amazing announcement.
I for one am a very very happy man,I just spent a large sum two days ago on a set of Leica PL lenses, which do cover full FF35mm,and it looks like all my Hasselbad lenses will still be useful to me.
But 6x17 is another story,I used to occasionally look at the case with my 10x8 lenses and speculate whether I should sell them, very glad I didn't,looks like I might need them re-housed for my Epic 28K when I get it.
All this has been a wet dream for a still photographer who also shoots cine.
Red have just pissed all over the competition,I don't think it will effect Nikon & Cannon in any major way,but I do feel sorry for Hasselblad,Phase One,Mamiya etc. Photographers who work at the high end,and can afford medium format digital backs, aren't going to think twice about this.
I'll probably keep my Red One for the lo res stuff, hehe.
Tom.

I hope you're wrong, and there is a misprint in the document - otherwise we're talking deliberate crippling of the configurations to sell non-industry standard lenses. Why else would you take away the option? So you can promote the monstro as a 6k option as opposed to something less?

It's a bummer that you you have to go to bigger pixel size/ resolution to get he extra latitude, but that's physics, and it's a sacrifice that'd almost always be worth it. You'd still be shooting a similar resolution to the Red One.

Extra dynamic range, along with higher frame rates is what I've been looking forward to.

JIM - GIVE US THE CHOICE. PLEASE.

How come I can't see any announcements at all on RED.com. . . where are you guys seeing this stuff????

Stephen

This direction for Red sure makes sense. Before with the Red One, the "obsolescence obsolete" thing was a little tough. With sensor technology still improving, and processing power increasing, the idea that any one camera body could be continuously upgradable was unlikely.

Now with the Scarlet and Epic line, all Red needs is a brain buy-in from customers. Accessories and lenses can then be continuously upgraded to better packages, and brains can be purchased without devaluing the rest of the system.

There are many additional questions to be had about the future of the fixed-lens Scarlet, the possibility of interchangeable lens Scarlet "packages", audio connections, etc. but I'm sure details will emerge.

This announcement says to me that Red is here for the long-haul... and next time I buy a camera, I'll know where to look.
