  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

13th responses here...

funny thing - trying to read through 1443 posts with my son sleeping in my arms ... and then switching back to the regular forum and reading a post like "redrushes hang" ...

... which is not funny, but funny in a way ;-)

Yes. Cropping does not affect dynamic range.

Well that's nice.....

So plotting an upgrade path...I'd....
- use PL mount.
- 13+ stops
- bit more rez/data than RedOne
- 17K more is fine

This points to Epic FF35 as I think serious cameraman would be stupid to put 10-30K into an upgrade and not get 2-3 stops of DR more

Correct?

I'd love to see a render of a fully equipped Epic 617 (the 28K Epic)

I don't want to see renderings.

I want to see real product photos.

And also all still and moving images samples available for download

in R3D that we can have a look at it and compare by ourself.

Waiting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Deanan, what are you still doing up? Was it the Macallan Cask Strength Highland Single Malt Scotch Whiskey? Sure was a fun night! See you in a couple hours! Mark, RED may have found a competitor to Tequila! Wish you could have been here to join the fun. It was awesome!

ARRRHHF ARRRHHHF!!
dammit my wife is gonna kill me in 2009!...

One for Deanan: red owners can upgrade to Monstro or to Mysterium-X??

The new cameras look great, and the design is astonishing. Congratulations!

But, on a more somber note, I wonder what will happen to us early adopters of the RED ONE who can't afford to upgrade to an Epic, or buy a additional Scarlet (like myself).

Don't get me wrong, the offer to credit the value of a RED to an EPIC, and the 12% discount on Scarlet is incredibly generous, and I admire Jim's honesty and customer loyalty in doing this, but on a real level the Scarlet S35 seems to out compete the RED ONE on every front, price, specs and forward upgrade path. If that isn't rendering the RED ONE obsolete I don't know what is.

Will RED ONE continue to be actively developed, or does it end here with the EPIC and Scarlet form factors continuing onwards while the RED ONE (after the mysterium X upgrade) simply stops developing?

That would make me very sad.
I believed Jim when he said that the RED ONE was the only camera we needed to buy, that it would be continually upgradeable, and that it would not fall into obsolescence. Of course I realized that I'd need to upgrade one day, to keep up with form factor changes, I just didn't think it would be so soon.

Edit:
Don't get me wrong here I'm not whinging for the sake of it, I love my RED I have used it all over the globe on all manner of shoots. I'm just voicing my thoughts on reading the new announcements.

The 617 is the best deal by far. :)

I know some of my friends are going to say "See, you should have waited" but I'm still very excited. Not only am I working with the Red One producing fantastic images, I have been grandfathered into a new upgrade path if I desire. All of that extra horsepower is going to come at a price in upgraded computer hardware, which for now, I'm quite happy with what I have. So this is great news. I can build on my system now, and when the need arises, I can switch to either Scarlet or Epic without being penalized for being an early adopter of a new technology.

Thanks Jim, for covering my six. That is good marketing and just plain decent of you. There is nothing like an honest man who treats his employees and customers squarely.

Deanan,

pixel for pixel...yeah

But as a practical camera...how would you make it a practical general purpose camera as well?
D

Wow...

Jim - Endless congratulations for the endless configurations.

Within the congfiguration choices is anything that anyone could have asked for.
When I saw the render of the Red One for the first time two years ago I was so excited - I felt I'd jumped many years into the future, and was thrilled at the thought of that camera delivering what it promised.

These configurations announced today make it so easy to buy and expand, and create imagery that can rise to ever more interesting levels... once again it feels like a surreal dream. The imagination runs wild, and once again the investment/upgrade in the equipment seems like a no-brainer.

It seems that maybe you've gained inspiration from the chaos that Reduser sometimes creates, with so many people asking for so many things - and come up with solutions that will inspire everyone.

Congratulations. I can't wait.

Another concern is media. With increased resolution and increased data rates, these 16gb cards are going to hold fewer and fewer minutes. I assume in a years time when these things might come out, cards will be larger and faster and cheaper, but it's still a concern. Not to mention with the increased data comes increased storage and backup.

I just got off the phone with Ken Corben, I've had my head underwater for the past three days. He told me to buy a few cold ones and log on.

Jim, I think you're gonna be responsible for my divorce!!! Shortest marriage in history.....

Awesome product line.......

Cheers,
Mark.
