  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

13th responses here...

But honestly... i respect RED for giving us the chance to take our cameras back.. thats the fucken shit right there.

If you trade in your REDone for an EPIC S35, you will be getting way more than double the camera for only $10k more.

I'm thinking the same Ken.
i'd like to get Epic FF35 - 13+ stops/rc225/FF35 (focus will be fun!)

But NO PL mount...pain!! I'm sure someone can tell me why...i.e larger sensor/focal length...etc.

D

PL mount lenses are built for S35 frame size, they do not produce an image circle big enough to cover FF35. You would get vignetting if you used a PL lens on a FF35 sensor most likely

PL mount wont cover a full frame 35mm sensor. However, I imagine you could still swap for the PL mount and shoot in S35 windowed mode, might even get a frame rate boost.

Then you'd get your 13 stops, although you'd take a resolution hit.

EDIT: what steve said

I'd take the resolution hit, any day. I want those stops, and will happily shoot at 4K and under if I can get them. I'll shoot at 3K if I have to.

But, yes, despite my own confusion about what to buy, and how the hell to get 13 stops with PL lenses, I am pretty shocked by the scale of this announcement. It's pretty stunning.

Apologies if I missed it, but are each one of these "brains" capable of shooting at multiple resolutions, like the RED One? If so, what *are* those resolutions?

Which leads me on to my next question...

If each one of these "brains" are capable of recording at multiple resolutions, what are the frame-rate options available if shooting at a lower resolution? For instance, with the RED One, you can only shoot up to 30FPS in 4K, but up to 120FPS in 2K.

M101.

So, what do you do with a RED 617...... and what don't you do?

And what can you do with it thinking outside the box?
hmmm.... nimslo like 3D, plenoptic, etc.

or plain old Lawrence of Arabia style epics...

Yippeeee!
after going through 1400 posts and reading the full length of Jim's post I have to say:
first and foremost, Jim renders countdown timers obsolete. Period (or are periods now obsolete)
I don't know how much room is there inside the RED One to put a FF35 sensor, or even a S35...
so what flavor of Monstro are we going to get?
and WHEN CAN I ORDER ONE?

Why not use a cropped image.

Deanan,
would this still yield 13+ stops

Well, it's been one hell of a night here on the east coast. I didn't intend to stay up all night...but.

Great work Jim and the Red team. I will have much to think about.

Very interesting.

Thanks for the hard work.

All is great!

One thing left that nowhere is written: How high will be the sensitivity of the 2nd generation Reds.

I want 800 ASA. I bet this will be the spec in this regard.

Hans

PS: The trade-in program is just brilliant.

ASA/ISO doesn't matter, it's digital gain anyways if I'm correct. Increase gain in post has the same effect, so you could shoot underexposed.

I hope there is a Hasselblad V mount for the Epic 645, those Zeiss V lenses are some of my favorites. I'd also like to see a Pentax 645 mount.

It's gonna be a tough decision, my initial call is for the 6K Epic provided windowing to S35 is possible with the PL mount.

The size of the wafer on the 617 must be mindblowing.

Question: since I am a wildlife guy, I'm presently looking at the XDCAM EX3 with a Nikon mount due to the increased mag. ratio of using 1/2" sensors. A Red 2/3" sensor would still give me a 2.5x mag. ratio with Nikon lenses---however, I need slow-motion as well. So, bottom line--can I crop the Red 2/3" sensor of the S35 Scarlet to gain higher frame rates (at least 60fps)? Otherwise I'm stuck with going with the Sony.
