  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Saw the brochure. Speechless. Actually I'm not, you're a genius Jim. Thank God you love cameras as much as your clients.

Whilst the spec doesn't include PL mount for some, the mounts are interchangeable. I'd be surprised if windowing the sensor ala Red One wasn't included for variable frame rates/different mounts.

I think you're probably right. My guess is they are listing the lens mounts which will cover the full active area of the sensor, in the same way as they list the frame rate which is possible with the full sensor. Lens mounts and frame rates possible with the sensor in windowed mode are not listed but let's hope they are implied.

But also bear in mind that Monstro has a larger pixel size - so a 4K window might be too big for PL mount lenses.

After I saw some of the specs

asking myself:

Is my RED1 obsolete?

My RED1 still not obsolete!?

I think my RED1 is still not obsolete:

How?

Let's say this is only in the case that my RED1 would be upgraded to Mysterium-X sensor.

So what I would get then?

According to the RED newest specs with RED1 upgrade I would get something close to Epic S35 that has 11+ dynamic range and 100fps speed at full size sensor.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think you are wrong. it's a sensor upgrade, but it's the other hardware preventing the big bonuses. New sensor might bring noise down, maybe more DR, but I don't think frame rates, for data rates will go up.

The best Scarlet is better and cheaper than the RED ONE. Even with the sensor upgrade, it looks like they won't be selling anymore RED ONEs. I mean, it still makes great pictures, but you can get a Scarlet with better specs for less money. At NAB it looked as though there were 3 distinct markets with Scarlet, RED ONE, and Epic, but it looks like the RED ONE doesn't really fit anymore.

All the new toys look great, but as someone who can't afford a new camera, it does feel a little depressing to see how limited our Upgrade options are. And while I always applauded RED on their "full trade in for an EPIC" deal, a 12% discount on a Scarlet doesn't seem seem to fit the same trend.

I imagine it will all make better sense when the dust settle and we really learn the nitty gritty. Congrats RED team, you are single handedly redefining the industry! :)

I bet that the upgrade will bring your R1's to Epic specs all around... new boards, etc... same guts just bigger box

though it won't be as Lego as the new boxes... that might be the only significant downside

But also bear in mind that Monstro has a larger pixel size - so a 4K window might be too big for PL mount lenses.

4K at 60 microns is not much bigger than 4.5K at 54 microns, and I've not seen the look-around vignetting, so fingers crossed we should be fine for most lenses!

EDIT: Just checked out the film back size given in Shake for "35mm full aperture" and it is 0.98" by 0.735", so any lens which covers that will be fine for 4K at 60 microns.

16mm comparisons

16mm comparisons

Anyone any idea how the 2/3 scarlet will compare with 16mm film, in terms of noise and DOF etc?

Jim

I'm not sure that makes sense. I mean, if that's the case then they'd probably charge the difference of a new Epic, otherwise everyone would just take the upgrade rather than the trade in. And if it's the same cost (way too much for me) then why would anyone do that rather than trade in?

I think my brain is going explode...

I need time... (inhale).... (exhale) ...

All that I'm able to say now is:

I'm SPEECHLESS !

Jim and Team, you truly are great...
