  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

13th responses here...

Is it safe to say that even the fixed lens Scarlet (2/3" sensor) will produce "movie-like" DOF?

No not at all! it will act like all 2/3 cameras (considering only DOF)

And why is that? Sensor size? Lens? Combo of both?

At what "brain size" would the image (in your opinion) pass for that "movie DOF" quality?

I think the goal of many who are considering purchasing on the low-end of the spectrum want the movie look for cheap... but if you only get that at the S35 or FF35 price point - well that changes things for a lot of us.

Jim has parted the Red Sea, hurray lord jim hurray! Tis clear! CLEAR AS CRYSTAL, Jim the FILM SLAYER has vanquished are beloved dragon!

THE KING IS DEAD! LONG LIVE THE KING!

Remember, Remember the 13th of November.

Wow the new slakers just came out of the wood work to start old arguments did they not. Did, they, not! (I lost my password to old account. I'm not so newb as I look)

Come now ladies these old arguments and discusions have happened many times, do some reading, not some writing.

But yeah wow. NAY SAY THAT NAYSAYING MOTHER LICKERS!

I haven't seen any discussion of the varying DOF across the brains... any ideas?

2/3" can still give you really nice dof

Considering "movies" are shot on S35 film and 2/3" is considerably smaller than S35, I think you can answer your own question as it pertains to DOF.

2/3" Scarlet with a fast f1.4 lens should look pretty similar to RED ONE (or 35mm film) at f4, as far as DOF goes. The difference is about 2.5 stops.

A lot of "movies" are shot on 2/3" sensors. Actually, most digitally shot ones so far were (and most of the ones in production right now are).

So, think of movies like the new star wars episodes, and you'll be close.

no exactly, most of the big studio digital shoots use "panavized" F900s, so movies like the Star Wars flicks indeed use 35mm lenses... I believe.

It would be great if we could get some side by side footage of the same scene, shot in various configurations. Perhaps in time for NAB or something.

I have a hard time picturing what BetaCam footage looks like - but I know what SWEP1 footage looks like. It may be a 2/3" sensor (or sensors) but it looks great.

I'm still not 100% clear on the relationship between sensor size and lenses as it pertains to DOF, especially Halsu's post. How does a f1.4 on a 2/3" sensor roughly equate to a f4 on a 35mm sensor? (sorry, I wish there was great book on optics for the layman, cause I'd buy it and learn!)

google f/Calc and download it and calculate DoF for whatever format you wish.

So I need to retract a previous post about my disappointment. I wasn't thinking that these camera's will have the same feature's as the RED ONE as in variable frame rates at lower resolutions. I was just thinking that it was be 30 frames or less at 5k only. That's not the case right? Because if it is I still have beef hahah. If it's not and you can get 60 at 4, 120 at 3 etc, then I am extremely pleased. More then ever

As far as i know, it's just a fancy name for a custom lens mount.

The main reason to use cine lenses is to be able to follow film work flow, with dedicated focus puller etc., which is not what video lenses are designed for.

It doesn't magically change the physics of the lense / sensor combo. DOF amount for a given field of view still depends only on sensor size and aperture.

My take on it all.........

Due 9 mths - Epic S35 (5K /11stops/ RC225) will have similiar visual options to Scarlet S35 (only RC42)
….so if you buy an Epic, you'd only want to buy the Scarlet 2/3" for fun!

Due 15 mths - Epic FF35 (6K/13 stop/RC225) will have similiar visual options to Scarlet S35 (only RC42)
….Red will launch Red mount (cine/still) lenses now. Also will have PL mount option. Upgrade from S35 to FF35 cost?
….Also interesting to understand the reasons to purchase a set of FF35 lens over an existing set of PL mount lens!!

Due 18 mths - Epic 645 (9K/13 stops/RC225)
….Interesting to know what the S35 or FF35 to 645 sensor upgrade cost will be!!

Most of what I care about is increased dynamic range and other attributes RC225 can offer.

Cheers
