  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

I was going to take pics but I still can't figure out how to turn off burn in mode. Waiting to hear from a engineer in China :)

I guess un plugging it doesn't reset it to normal operation, huh?

HAHA. i did that too and freaked. I was like FUCK did I just brick it?. Unplugging it for 10 min did not help. You gotta just turn it off using the power button on the side (yeah remote doesnt work) when it turns back on its normal.

Your welcome =)

Problem - bug or defect/return

Problem - bug or defect/return

Okay, now that burn-in mode is off, here's the problem I was trying to troubleshoot. I'm getting problems with 4K signals, both from Samsung Blu-Ray and from PC. Tried multiple inputs and multiple cables (different brands 1.4a cables).

Problem appeared after a few hours of use, so I suspect I need to return it unless some has an idea. What happens is signal splits into flickering quads.

EDIT: Not sure why image link is not working but open in new tab and it works.

I wanna play too... Looks like mine is here in town according to tracking info, so I'm expecting it tomorrow or friday. :)

Short answer ... NO ... tried that last night ... had a DP to HDMI cable into HDMI port #1 and HDMI to HDMI into port #3 running off a TITAN on a PC and could not get any kind of signal to display out of the DP cable ... HDMI to HDMI worked just fine at 3840x2160 @ 30HZ ... also, looks to me like the panel is only 6 bit with 8 bit dithering or maybe 8 bit with 10 bit dithering (but doubt it).

On a Mac with a Quadro K5000 could not get a 3840x2160 signal to display on either the DP or HDMI output ... you can't change refresh rates on a Mac.

Neil

Quick update on developments this morning and some pixs:

1) got DaVinci Resolve running on a PC but can not get the SEIKI to display the 3840x2160 signal coming out of the BlackMagic 4K Extreme DeckLink card - tried all kinds of combinations but no luck.

2) The GTX TITAN drives the panel just fine .... can play 4K Uncompressed QuickTimes in QT Player no problem ... UHD rez images look great.

3) can also play Resolve in 4K on the SEIKI out of the TITAN ... in full screen 4K mode the images look stunning.

So the issues seems to be getting the correct refresh rate (not Resolve frame rate) coming out of the BMD 4K DeckLink card - has any one else ahd any luck with the 4K Extreme?

Here's some pixs I took with my iPad Mini .... the footage is from a 5K EPIC feature rendered out in Resolve at 3840x2160:

I know the panel is driven via 4 LVDS links so maybe there is a problem there? I am not sure if the LVDS links are quadrants or not though.

The other cool thing we did this afternoon is get our favorite color calibrator to come in and tweak the SEIKI ... David Webb is a genius when it comes to accurately profiling plasmas, LCDs and OLEDS ... he works with all the big post houses in LA ... David quickly got his spectroradiometer into action and put up his charts .... the bad news is that the panel is not perfect but the good news is that for the price point it is pretty damn good! .... the colorimetry is actually surprisingly accurate ... once David had finished tweaking the SEIKI and we put up the EPIC footage in Resolve in full screen we both took a deep breath and said WOW ... not that you'd do mission critical color grading on this monitor but as an accurate 4K client monitor that's dialed in to what you're seeing on your grading monitor it is pretty damn sweet.

If you want David to come and tweak your Seiki (and your psyche at the same time) give us a bell and we'll organize a visit.

We will be demoing the calibrated SEIKI at our 4k MADE EASY Training Day this coming Saturday (April 27th) on the Lot in West Hollywood ... if you want to see how easy and cost-effective it is to push 4K through a data and color pipeline sign up on our website on the Events page.

In the meantime here's some more pixs of the SEIKI and David in action:

Have you contacted BMD? Sort of a bummer if it doesn't play nice-w-Resolve and the 4K Extreme card. Personally, I am going with an AJA Kona3G-w-a SDI to HDMI 4K mini converter.

Seriously good news, Jeff .... the blacks are very clean and lots of detail ... the skin tones were lovely - very natural ... and the detail in the wides stunning ... EPIC plus SEIKI is going to be a killer combination .... hopefully you'll get yours soon and let us know what you think ... out of the box it was pretty damn good but after David worked his magic it was actually surprisingly pleasing to the eye.

Where are you based? ... for some reason I thought you ran out of NY ... if you're anywhere near West Hollywood this Saturday you should drop in on our 4K Training session and see the SEIKI in action next to the EIZO CG 276 and the 2K DLP.

Picture of the TV showing the HDMI resolution ... damn spiffing stuff.

Great news - willing to share your settings after calibration? I will be posted mine shortly from just quick eyeballing with WOW disk.

And it's working again - did not change anything again. I suspect it's a bad unit but will give it a few day before returning.

Here's my numbers from a quick eyeball WOW calibration (given that TINT is not adjustable and this was before discovery of service menu)

COLOR TEMP = WARM
CONTRAST = 92
BRIGHTNESS = 28
COLOR = 44
SHARPNESS = 32

Does anyone know or think that a New iMac full spec from thunderbolt to Hdmi adapter will work with this unit?

I figured out the problem at least with my unit is related to sleep mode. When it goes to sleep connected to the PC (via HDMI of GTX 660) it comes up "not support" error message (one of my typos in menus). Changing refresh rate fixes it. Does not matter which refresh (24 or 30hz) is set. I'm not sure if that's related to the Quad issue - and if this is a faulty unit or a bug in all units.
