  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

Datasheet says 4K over HDMI..

EDIT: I bet that nobody noticed this: it is a 10 bit Color monitor too.. (correct me if I am wrong)..

Where are you getting all this info from, can you please post link (on color bit).
The Data sheet I am looking at it says;
Component & HDMI supports: 480I, 576I, 480P, 576P, 720P, 1080I ,1080P, 4k2k 30HZ

You're right. Good catch!

"4k2k 30Hz"

A VGA connector won't support 4k. Tops out around 2k. The only connector that will is the HDMI 1.4 jack (barely). HDMI 2.0 can't come soon enough...

From first glance it almost seems like it just takes 1080 and upscales. Is this correct?

Everything I see under 4K appears to playback exactly as it is, which I prefer. Garbage in/garbage out especially applies here with image quality, even at 50". Alexa and Red footage stand out, even at 1080p.

Anything negative to say about the set yet, John? I'm seriously thinking about asking a friend in the US to send me one.

Can you dump the EDID to see what modes are available? I wonder if there is a 1920x2160 mode so you can run it at 60Hz via two HDMI (2x1920x2160) for 3840x2160@60hz like a lot of the other 4k panels. I so would love to buy this but the 30Hz is a deal breaker for me.

I plan to use it as a big computer monitor.
If 30 Hz is a 'deal breaker' then shooting at 24 fps is even dumber I guess.

People keep saying "30 Hz refresh rate" - but the data sheet says 120 Hz. Am I missing something?

Is there an indication somewhere that this monitor will be this price for the whole month of April? Or was that conjecture?

Over here (Hong-Kong) there was a "Telefunken" 4K display 42 inch for 17500 HKD, which should be 2200 USD. It was displaying some sort of PC Game. It looked a lot more underwhelming than the LG 4K 84" display showing timelapse I saw. In fact, 1080p panels where next to this 4K panel and they seemed equal if not sharper than the Telefunken. Maybe they couldn't output or use the panel's strenghts, but I was really disappointed. Nowhere near the 4K glory of the LG, which made me say: this is it this is the future!

I'm fairly certain that means the display accepts 4K at 30fps (as in 2160p30), while the panel refresh rate is 120Hz. No problem, in other words.

Does anyone know what the LG 4K display accepts in terms of 4K files? What encoding? I have access to one and would like to try some Epic shots on it. H264? 4K 2160p plays well in my retina, just not sure if the LG has the horsepower for that, or if it even reads the mp4 file!

Forget all that. Instead, build a PC with a new-ish GPU from Nvidia or AMD, one that has the new 3GHz HDMI 1.4. That's capable of 4K. Connect PC to display via HDMI and you're off to the races.

Take into account that the refresh rate is directly associated with the response time of the panel in milliseconds, which in this panel is 6ms.. A response time of 2 to 6 milliseconds grey-grey is the tipical for monitors with faster refresh rates (120-240 fps). But don't forget that 120hz is the maximum refresh rate accepted by the panel, but your video card is the one responsible of sending the refresh rate information into the panel.

The 30hz limitation is because that's the max allowed for 4K x 2K (UHD) with HDMI 1.4. 24hz and 25hz is also supported by the spec and, presumably, by the TV. Actual 4k (4096 × 2160), which this panel does not support, is limited to 24hz with HDMI 1.4.
