$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

Just wondering, why all the concern about the refresh rate?
Are you all shooting HFR movies for 48 fps viewing?

Computer monitors are typically refreshed at 60 hz. It makes the things like moving windows around look less jumpy.

From wikipedia:
For example, most movie projectors advance from one frame to the next one 24 times each second. But each frame is illuminated two or three times before the next frame is projected using a shutter in front of its lamp. As a result, the movie projector runs at 24 frames per second, but has a 48 or 72 Hz refresh rate.

Well, it feels like some sort of economic criminal conspiracy somewhere up the chain over here. There is already official government enquiries going on in other sectors. Sick of this country, they overprice and starve us of a lot of stuff just to rip us off for more profit to prop up their megalomania millionaire lifestyles, paying sales people who don't know or care about anything but their own pockets. You really have to go to small speciality shops to get somebody you don't have to be careful of. They don't know and aren't making enough effort to get in cheaper sets, just interested in selling expensive sets and cheap hd and fhd junk way over priced.

Man you guys are lucky over there, it would cost me hundreds to get an incompatible set transported here without warranty, something you don't want to do unless you can afford an LG anyway. The system seems to be forcing cheap sets back as far as possible, so it might be the end of the year before we get any. Which really means that individuals in the community get taken for $5-$10k extra rides due to what is the usual anti trust issues. Suppliers can do contracts to get models in, and if manufacturers refuse in order to manipulate profit percentages, you can offer a bigger contract to one supplier to flood the market, diminishing all the other cheap suppliers profits by 50% when they get to market late.

As we see from the industry reports, there is so little different cost between fullhd and 4k, because 4k was affordable years ago, and 8k TV's and cameras are the true top end, but kept back. It all enough to make you want to become a politician to get rid of it. ;)

That's right!, the refresh rate on that monitor is more than enough for normal viewing. If you shot at 240fps, you will see it at 30fps, only in slow motion!.

Les, we need more stills like this one in order to test the damn thing! ja ja!

Thanks Pablo !
I ordered this 4k monitor so I can actually see the footage I'm editing from that trip to India where that still was pulled from.
I can't wait to see it for the first time all at once!
I think you will be blown away when you see the final genuine 4k non narrative short!

REDRAY supports 1.4 HDMI single cable.. thats how we were driving all the different monitors at NAB. We have these coming in just like everyone else and as soon as it lands on our doorstep Ill hook it up to a REDRAY player and let you know how it works.

Oh' Nice jarred

Any update on RED-ray delivery, can this be ship before projector?

Any chance (in future) epic will have 4K out (Like new BMC), I would love to have this TV on set as a client monitor.

Do you mean we aren't going to get greater than 4kp24, or uhdp30 Jarred?

Negative. All Jarred was saying is that your can pump out 4K up to 30fps via a single HDMI 1.4 as that's what the standard supports. As it stands in it's current form REDRAY supports up to 60fps at 4K and in 3D via 4 HDMI 1.4 connections.

Curious how does the color look on this? Some are saying it's 10 bit (almost too good to be true) ? How are the blacks? The specs say 5000:1 contrast ratio which seems very low but I understand the way manufacturers have been interpreting or calculating this ratio is very subject to the point where it's almost meaningless.

HDMI is limited to 8-bit at UltraHD resolutions. Same applies to HDMI 2.

That's frakkin' criminal. If HDMI 2 is that limited how can it be more than an interim solution designed to force everyone to upgrade again sooner than later? Meh.

I'm not saying 6G SDI is a better answer, but at least the connectors are robust. Considering the trajectory of resolution, frame rates, bit depth, interactive features, etc in electronics these days is it too much to ask for an interconnect standard that has some frakkin' headroom?! I realize that cost matters and all that, but when aiming for a moving target you need to lead it at least a little bit. I'm a tech nerd and don't mind splitting audio/video signal paths and switching them independently, but for the broader marketplace that's a PITA that will only restrain the growth rate of the 4K ecosystem.

Would it be capable of displaying 10bit color at 1080P?

HDMI supports 10 and 12-bit at 4:2:2 for 1080p today. It may support 10-bit 4:4:4 as well. I would have to look at the current spec.

HDMI 2 is limited to 8-bit UltraHD @ 60 Hz. Not sure if you go down to 24Hz if it will support 10-bit or not. There was pushback from display makers on 10-bit UltraHD support. It means they have to put an effort in for quality. :-)

UPDATE 3: What's better than UltraHD? Same UltraHD picture, lower price! Tigerdirect.com is now unbelievably offering this set with online coupon code for $1199.99 if you search around online... enjoy!
