  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A month before, shot Kerala 'Kalari Martial Arts' sequence for Qube Digital Cinema Company to showcase their 120fps HFR capable QUBE IMB which is only the first and only one right now to project 2K @ 120fps in 3D using QUBE Digital Cinema Server and Two Projectors.

The entire sequence was shot in 5K 2.4:1 mode @ 120fps in 12:1 RC using ATOM 3D Rig. Entire Material was edited using Avid Media Composer 6 and Color Timed in 3D using FilmMaster. Sound Mix was done in Media Artist, Chennai for the first time viewing in 3D using Sony 3D Monitor.

Final output look brilliant and stunning and each fps starting from 24fps to 60fps to 120fps have an sea change in difference in context to previous fps projection. This 120fps demo will be showcased worldwide in tradeshows across the globe in coming months in QUBE Digital Cinema Booth.

I'm late to the game, but i found out through error after error that in order to overcrank we must use only multiples of our timeline...which after using a 24fps time frame base and trying to shoot overcranked at 30fps....i tried everything to get the cameras to sync....Now old news im sure...but for those that dont know....a piece of info.

I posted this in Przemysław Sztoch's thread from earlier today. It's a comprehensive chart that me and my crew spent a few days testing and putting together. You need to adjust your time base and sync generator to achieve various frame rates with 3D sync. This chart shows them all. Some may require black shading of the sensor to work properly. You must also make sure your HD-SDI output is set to auto.

hfr sync

hfr sync

yeah i'd also love to see your workflow. we had some issues syncing epics with a 48fps time base on a 3D shoot just last week. i'm not aware of anything that will sync at 120.. what did you set your generator at.. 60?

Yes Jason,

Its not possible to Sync in 120fps and shutter sync not had much of an issue for us when we saw in 120fps.

Please, explain better columns of your calc sheet. And what cables do you use? Only "Sync" socket with genlock and tc pin in both epic? Do you use sync/gpin pin in "Sync" socket?

This chart was made using a Denecke 3DSB-T as the source of genlock and timecode. As for describing the chart, here it is. The "clip #" column should have been eliminated, that was just used in our testing to match up test clips with the data and verify the results. The "timebase" column tells you what timebase I had the EPICs set to. The "Denecke" column tells you what timebase I had the Denecke 3DSB-T set to with its dip switches (this could be an Ambient device or an Aja Gen10 or something similar). The "TC rate on SB-T" column indicates which position the 4 position dial on the Denecke 3DSB-T was set to. The "FPS" column indicates the target frame rate as set on the EPIC. The "shutter" column indicates the shutter angle or shutter speed I had the EPICs set to. The "resolution" column indicates the target resolution as set on the EPIC. The "21c3D sync test" column indicates whether or not that particular combination of settings passed a sync test performed by my crew and is included to verify the 'sync' and 'gen' indicators on the EPIC.

The 21c3D sync test consisted of shooting an LED light source (smart slate in this case) at very high shutter speed (1/1000th of a sec in this case). The refresh rate of an LED is extremely fast. If the partially rendered LED numbers on the smart slate are represented identically in left and right eye images when shot at 1/1000th of a second, you've got a very good indicator of 3D synchronization. This is the same test I instructed Pedro to perform back in 2009 on my original genlock tests of the RED ONE.

The "EPIC TC" column indicates whether or not the EPICs each showed that they were receiving time code from the Denecke 3DSB-T. The "EPIC Genlock" column indicates whether or not the EPICs showed that they were receiving genlock from the Denecke 3DSB-T. The "EPIC Sync" column indicates whether or not the EPICs showed that their shutters where in sync. The most important column is the "21c3D sync test" column. If this column indicates that a particular group of settings was "in sync" then it is good to go for 3D.

Very good Jason! Thanks.
1. Do you use shutter sync via sync cable and GPIn/GPOut pin?
EPIC-MASTER-CommSocket-GPOut ----> EPIC-SLAVE-SyncSocket-GPIn
2. Or do you sync via GenLock/TC only?
Denecke TC ----> EPIC-MASTER-SyncSocket-TCIn
Denecke TC ----> EPIC-SLAVE-SyncSocket-TCIn
Denecke Genlock ----> EPIC-MASTER-SyncSocket-GenlockIn
Denecke Genlock ----> EPIC-SLAVE-SyncSocket-GenlockIn

Would you like to check your test with shutter sync cable?

If you have got extra cable LEMO4<->3xBNC, then you can check it easly.
Let's make this connection:
EPIC-MASTER-SyncSocket ---> Lemo4-YellowBNC ---> BNC2BNC ---> WhiteBNC-Lemo4 --> WhiteBNC-SyncSocket-EPIC-SLAVE

I am waiting for Your feedback :-)
