$100K REWARD...

Glad Mark and all his family are unharmed, but with the targeted theft of this camera l feel this has touched us all who are signed up here on Reduser, although we don't know Mark or Jim personally, but the sense of a community and this violation is felt by us all. Unfortunately most of us have be robbed at some point in time so can appreciate a little how Mark and his family must be feeling.

When Mark first posted on here with his new Epic 0006 we where all so excited for him and Jim and the Red Team as this was the new dawn, the new dawn is still here but now a little tainted. All will move on in time, but at this moment the scum that undertook this act must be caught and punished. This cannot be seen more than Jim's act of posting a reward of $100,000.

Good luck to the French police in catching these pieces of trash, and if your on reading this as a member! you will be caught as you have violated this community.

regardless of any REWARD,eyes and ears open here in CROATIA.
All the best to Mark and his family.

Be shure that comunity is with you...

Hell...the whole army is with you...

a touch of dissent..

a touch of dissent..

No time to read the whole thread. No way I'd mean to support any thieves of any kind, especially thieves that have stolen a red M-camera, from anyone. We all support Mark.

Anyway... reward, big money, catch'em story...

I'm not sure this is good idea honestly. The people who stole can claim they found it or bought it off the people who stole it. Now they will have a lot more money than what they even thought possible. It's like negotiating with terrorist. That's just my opinion.

Guys, GPS doesn't do you any good without a way to transmit the coordinates. So the camera would also need a GSM radio, with a power source, on at all times, with a prepaid cellular account valid in every country.

Pretty impractical.

Chris-Reread his post. It is for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thieves, as well as return of the equipment.

I am really ashamed by that stuff.
Am glad anyway that no one got hurt. But the thieves are pretty fucking bastard.

I'm also ashamed that it happened in France. I hope this incident won't give everyone a bad feeling about us french.

I'll put the info on myspace and in my cinema school on monday.
I hope that someone will find the camera.

That's why Jim specifically stated the reward would not be paid without the arrest and conviction of the thieves who stole it.

That's not entirely correct. Personal Locator Beacons (PLB's) don't use GSM because in many instances GSM is not available in remote locations. Many use satellite connections, some just broadcast a blip onto an emergency radio frequency and some (like LoJack) use a simple radio transceiver that broadcasts to their own network of receivers. LoJack also uses internet IP tracking to find and recover stolen electronics. It's not as complex as you might imagine.

In thinking about it, a very simple solution would be to add some password protection to the OS. Even a simple 4-digit PIN on startup would offer some level of theft deterrent for what is a very expensive piece of equipment. Even many $2k laptops have biometric security options. Obviously this wouldn't be as practical for rental units, but for owner/operators, might give some level of security.

All security can be hacked. What you want is evidence for prosecution. Therefore the Red software may be the only tool you have to ferret out an illegal camera. If every software update contained a database of the PIN metadata from the R3D's, it could report that as well as the GPS data back to Red via internet connection without the user knowing it. Then at least you'd have a lead. Pretty soon, after a few prosecutions, a Red camera would be Kryptonite to a thief. That's about the only way to do it.

I haven't researched this completely, but a cheap tracking solution might be: take an old (but not too old) cell phone that you no longer use, and start charging it like you use it and stick it in a case or bag with your stuff. If it is new enough to have gps in it as per 911 requirements- (even a deactivated phone can call 911, in the states anyway) it can be pinged and located by the carrier. Just make sure to write down the serial # or whatever they call the unique number for the carrier to identify the handset and activate it when bag it's in is stolen and have cops or carrier ping it. Or buy a cheap phone and add it as an extra line on your current contract and maybe get a smartphone or something that supports apps for using tracking (you can get software core tracking your kids phones I think) and stick that phone in the bag. Think of it as a gps tacking device you can actually make phone calls on.
Just remember to charge the thing like your regular phone and leave it on

try tracking isp from anyone looking at this issue related threads, in and around the area of the ocurrence. maibe you are allready.

i still can't believe this. i mean, what are the freaking ODDS!

and call me paranoid, but could there be other chefs out

there who are in search of the ingredients to the secret sauce?

and would they be willing to go to lengths to obtain it? i might

still be high from last night, but this is just too unbelievable.

Read carefully... Jim said the reward would only be paid upon capture and conviction of the thieves, not if the camera were simply returned.

EDIT: As has now been pointed out several times, I see.

Not a bad idea. A slim chance, but worthy.

I agree David. A lot of people are quick to shoot down ideas in this world. I'd really like to see people move away from classifying ideas as "good" or "bad"-- ideas should be classified not in binary terms like yes/no, but based on their relevance, potential and theoretical impact on a given application or problem.

I find too often the person that says "no" is the person with the least imagination. The limited player.

Sometimes you think outside the box and sometimes the box thinks outside you.

google analytics is basically already doing that for them if they look at it...

I must admit i dont agree with this reward.. Im afraid of what could happen if those thieves have some brains on them... because they could find about this reward and one of 2 things could happen.... first pissibility, they stage a citicen arrest, and get someone with nothing to loose trown into jail... charge the reward, and 5 - 10 years later, when the "thief" goes out.. hand him 10k or 20k that he wouldnt ever be able to get by himself.

Second possibility...the most scary one.. if the thieves find out what they have stolen.. they could get cold feet, and just toss it away in the trash.. and that camera would get lost or damaged for good.

5 - 10 years later

Isn't the punishment on non violent theft monetary (as in a fine), not imprisonment? I know we have strong feelings about this, but - if ever caught -the evil doers propably will walk free. :nonod:
