  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1.8" SSD Module

Are you guys talking about rear modules or just the new Compact Flash / SSD drives working on R1? Media we can make work on R1.. but not rear modules.

Just the media. I would assume it would need a different module or means of connecting the media to the RED One anyway. I would just like to keep current with the various media formats and not support one collection of media for the RED One and another set of media for the EPICs, Scarlets, etc..

I guess the only reason would be when you need the absolute lightest and smallest setup.

64GB CF cards aren't too bad either when used in the side CF module.

The SSD module doesn't had much weight or length to the set up. It's awesome and a big main the Epic can do what it does. I want it.

Yes.. the R1 is modular in terms of media.. and we are working on a few ways to use the SSD's on R1. Of course the pipes in the R1 will not be able to take advantage of the increased speeds that media is capable of, but they can mimic the current R1 options. The new 64GB CF card of course just works in the normal side CF slot everyone has now.

I just want to be clear, that there will not be any way to hook up an EPIC 1.8" SSD rear Module to a RED ONE, or the PRO I/O, Proxy Module, etc. etc. etc.

Yes just the media.

REDMAG is the actual media. The SSD Module is the camera module that attaches to the camera and has the slot for the REDMAG to go into.

Lol,
and of course one can't put a scarlet brain or epic brain into a RED ONE... :mad2:

of course it can't.. but, what interests me is the fiber connection.. wasn't RED ONE the pioneer with optical fiber connection to storage? I don't remember the name of that module.. what was it? the one that was an option to be installed in the place of the CF module on the RED ONE..

EDIT: ok I remembered : RAW PORT .. isn't it possible to make a faster connection to storage through the a RAW PORT like module?

RAW PORT is an option by which you can obtain the uncompressed RAW data from the Mysterium sensor. It includes fiber optic translator and utilizes 10GBit Ethernet.

Most users will not require RAW PORT for their application, REDCODE RAW (compressed) data being visually lossless.

Is alive and kicking.. Along with the 128GB 1.8" REDMAG, and 1.8" RED STATION reader.

Crackpot? Just figure I should ask...

I would be nice to know if the SSD sits flush or not. I guessing it's sticking out like that to display the info on the side of the media for demonstration reasons. but that's just a guess.

it dose look a little vulnerable sticking out like that.

That is a single SSD modal; a question was asked if you could put two modules and record to one then the outer. but for space saving is there plans for a double slot module? and can you continually record and continue to alternately swap the media?

thanks for the updates as always Jarred

When shooting with Cf card and redmag in at the same time, when the CF runs out can it roll over to the redmag?

I love how small that redmag is..any chance you could show us how the connector end of the redmag media itself looks?

My guess is that because there has to be a connector on the inside of the module and the modules are so narrow, we are seeing the way it really works. There isn't an eject button in the picture, so it looks like you have to be able to grab the SSD to pull it out. It looks like there is only about 5/8" of the SSD exposed. If that was really a problem, we wouldn't be able to plug in the cables for the EVF and LCD on the R1. Just sayin'.

Jarred - that's what I was referring to in post 18 - a sled of some sort - perhaps a half brother to the RED Station 1.8" with a tail that would plug into the drive connector on the R1. I'm curious - you mentioned the upgrade to the connectors on the SSD - as opinion only, does this make the SSD interface superior to the smaller pins on the CF cards?

Jeff Kilgore has stated more clearly than I the desire to standardize media. I agree with all the other supporting input from others related to the media itself being the key.
But if this happens, I hope that EPIC phase 2 owners will get priority on orders.
After all, sharing the drives / media with R1 is just icing on the cake.

By the way, have you determined which connector type will terminate the fiber?
Assuming that the plan is single mode for the signal.

Probably at the point of asking too many questions. But I'm impressed - I love the direction this is going in....

Now thinking of something related for the RED development team to consider - please direct me. PM or ?

You know, I'm sure there is a post out there somewhere about this.. But it's looking to me like Stage One has begun.

So... Steve, Mark... You guys have anything you'd like to share with the class?

Jay
