  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Yes, getting access to the firmware is difficult. To be honest, I can't even download firmware directly from RED's site! I'm not a camera owner, so firmware is off limits to me.

You never want to [re]install firmware on a camera without permission from the owner. The logic of preventing non-owners from downloading firmware is that if you have permission from the owner, the owner can send you the firmware.

As a DIT who works with hundreds upon hundreds of different cameras, I'd be a fool not to have every version of the camera's firmware available to me. It's a bummer that I can't download it directly, but naturally I've found ways to get fresh copies of the firmware when needed. Other DITs out there should do the same. What happens when the camera needs a reinstall at 4:00 AM on a Sunday? You can't call the owner then! Be ready.

i hope in the future RED will allow everybody to download the firmware. But to install/load it to the camera, someone should use some kind of dongle (REDKEY) which have to be 'paired' with the camera before. this REDKEY will store the firmware, camera setting, project setup etc

it could be nice collectibles

I would hope they don't do this, it's just another item to lose on set that could potentially shut down a shoot.

Well, right now Adobe CS4 dosen't support the new color "science". I asked it several times without getting an answer : will the Adobe plugin be updated to allow people to use the FLUT™ thing/Redgamma within CS4, or will it be necessary to update to CS5 ? And if yes, would it be possible to get a release date ? Outputting to DPX is another way, but a pain in terms of storage needs for a feature.
Giving some dates, even approximated, helps people to make workflow choices.
Thanks !

Asking the same question :)

This would be a burden on RED but might be useful in helping keep stolen cameras from getting firmware updates. Somehow making an individual camera handshake with the firmware could possibly make them less of a target for theft, but still wouldn't stop the opportunity thieves.

Having some collectible key or serialized firmware would be an absolute disaster on set when it hits the fan.

I'm on a shoot where our SI2K connected to the internet and disabled itself because its registration was out of date. The further RED stays from stuff like that the better!
