Well, here she is, my baby. It has been a long journey riding the waves of Scarlet fever since very near the inception. I actually got her a couple of weeks ago, but the Side Handle just came in. She just wasn't the same without it, and shooting tethered to the wall only goes so far - though I did get some quality time shooting trees from my porch with an extension cord. I decided to sell all of my Nikon lenses last minute to go with Leica, and I am very glad that I made that decision. She is pictured here with a VARIO-ELMARIT-R 28-90 F/2.8-4.5 ASPH - this is one hell of a lens, and I got a great deal on it, which was the catalyst for me to jump the Nikon ship. Sure, it is not 2.8 all of the way through the zoom range, but the image quality is jaw dropping - great color, very sharp, very well corrected, nine blade aperture - and that beautiful modern Leica look that can't be beat - very three dimensional image. I also have a 35mm Summicron, which is a really interesting lens with a lot of character, and I am currently building up my R prime collection. I decided to go with the zoom first since the price was right, and they are fairly rare relatively speaking. It was a beautiful day in Wisconsin considering it is winter, so I went on my first real shoot unplugged: As soon as you start shooting with this camera rays of sunlight begin to envelop you. I love the compact size of this rig - that is even a 28-90 zoom. That little Manfrotto head was used for my DSLR on the slider - a little underpowered, but I don't have the 100mm bowl attachment for the slider yet. It works, so I may keep this config for lightweight missions. Videos, and further thoughts to come.

I can't believe this quality of footage can be shot with something that fits in a small backpack. One camera backpack, one slider bag, and one tripod bag to make this - kind of puts it into perspective. These are some amazing times! This footage could be easily screened in a movie theatre (not with Vimeo encoding). Of course we all know what these cameras are capable of, but it is something different when you do it yourself with your own gear.

The latitude - amazing - HDRx, amazing, even with the controls in RCX. Can't imagine what could be done with Resolve (someday). I want to experiment more with HRDx to fine tune the proper number of stops, and A frame exposure that yields the best results.

This video was shot with Scarlet, and a Leica 28-90 zoom. I love this lens! I love this camera! Thanks RED Team!

Update 2/15/12 Here is a new version of my original clip. What a difference! I knew that I was not unlocking what the image had to offer... This is how it should look:

Congratulations Steven. I started my Contax Zeiss collection in a very similar way. I quickly gravitated towards the CZ 35-70 3.3 Macro Zoom, considered by many in the still community as one of the greatest still zooms ever made.

I picked it up at Adorama, mint, for half price.

A year later I have a whole collection of primes to match. Can't wait to put them on the Scarlet!

Congrats again. Very cool.

Congrats Steven!!! Good pictures...

Nice post Steve. After reading Mark's review about the Canon primes I pulled the trigger on the 24, 50, 85. He's basically comparing these to his MP's and that's good enough for me. I was originally planning Leica but with the price gouging that's not going to happen. Maybe when the bubble bursts I'll grab me a few. Now where's the video you shot! :)

Congratulation .........
You are using cartoni focus HD tripod.. Is it good for scarlet ...?

I love the Cartoni Focus! Have never had a Cartoni product before, and took a gamble after I heard good things - I am so glad that I did. At about $1000 this head is a steal, and can hold it's own with many heads costing 2-3 times as much. If you are on the fence about getting one - do it, you won't be disappointed.

Congrats!

Such a great zoom lens!!!

Sanjin - I must say that I have you to thank on at least some level for my initial exploration of Leica. Your evangelizing led me to explore more, and I ultimately spent countless hours on Flickr pouring over Leica lens examples. There is a very unique and special look created by these lenses, which I have not found elsewhere.

Steven,

I glad you like it.

And it's not only about a special look of Leica glass, it's also about extraordinary optical quality that even Jim as a lens expert lately realized that Leica delivers higher MTF than many other lenses (Canon L) even more than some of leading PL primes or zooms,...

Right on Steven! Congrats.

I really love the skin tones the Leica's produce and the beautifully unique way the focus falls off in the images they produce! I built a prime set over the last 4 months...19, 28, 35, 50, 60, 90, 135 Summicron & Elmarit. I need to get them sent into Duclos but it's so hard to part with them!

90mm Summicron on camera:

19mm v1 Elmarit: (half the price of v2, but goddamn it make a beautiful image!)

Enjoy your setup!

What length LCD cable is that? Mine came with a super short one and I'd like to get something longer to make it a bit more versatile. The one you have looks like a good length.
