Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
Alfonso Parra found that at ISO 800, the Alexa 35 has between 14-15 stops of dynamic range, with 9 stops above 18% gray and just over 5 stops below 18%. This is not the total range the sensor can ‘see’, but the usable dynamic range (pretty certain it’s SNR=2). At ISO 800, how many stops above...
Not sure when the marketing department over at Blackmagic Design decided to use a Sandisk Extreme Pro to illustrate the ability of their new full frame Cinema Camera to record to external disks, but it seems like unfortunate timing, given that Western Digital is facing multiple class-action...
A recipe for failure? Seriously? Erik Messerschmidt won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography on Mank. The title of the thread is "Why ETTR is bad when shooting HDR"; and reading the article, it doesn't hold up. In fact, the writing is quite poor. For example, he writes, "As you move up into...
Phil, I'm not seeing obnoxious banding in the anamorphic video as seen in the spherical monochrome video, but you're comparing a postage stamp sized anamorphic crop with severely reduced bit rate and excessive noise. But for sure, whoever uploaded the video wasn't doing the camera any justice...
Who can help me out here? There’s an Arca Swiss plate on my Komodo for the DJI RS3 and Gitzo travel tripod, but every time I switch over to my heavy duty tripod with rods, I’ve got to remove it. What’s the best solution?
I’ve tried to make this the most comprehensive resource for those wanting to shoot and grade HDR for YouTube.

"Hope everyone is having a great holiday so far and thanks to all the brave ones with Komodos that are banging on the beta build. Btw the beta build turns on support for PL lens /i data, and our new fully supported top and bottom titanium RF to PL mount with /i data is an absolute tank… and I am...
The popularity of anamorphic lenses seems to be skyrocketing now that affordable sets from the likes of Atlas, Sirui, Venus Optics and Great Joy are becoming plentiful and receiving excellent reviews. Unfortunately for anamorphic shooters, it would appear that most camera sensors aren't...
When Dolby conducted a study of viewer preferences for luminance levels of specular highlights and emissive sources to determine the dynamic range needed to display HDR content, it was found that the average preferred maximum luminance for highlight reproduction satisfying 50% of viewers is...
I found the solution. Create a new node after the CST (RWG Rec.2020 HDR2084 1,000 nits) and apply the Gamut Limiter from Resolve FX Color. For Current Gamut, select Rec2020, for Current Gamma select ST2084 1,000 nits, then Limit Gamut to P3-D65.
From DaVinci Resolve manual:
Gamut Limiter...
It looks like Face Detect AF is on the horizon for the RED Komodo, probably with a firmware update in December. Meanwhile, it’s available through the Red Control App.
The free version of the RED Control App now offers Face Detect AF and it works with the RED Komodo. The feature will not work...
Not sure what you’re referring to by ‘full range of highs, mids and lows’ [sic] - all RED cameras record HDR without any additional settings or hardware. Three RED cameras were used in the making of The Mission. With 16-bit RedCode RAW, you’re always capturing HDR. As for exposure, I just rely...
