  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Taking Stock: All things RED April 2010

David,
Nice list of things...
From a dry rental perspective it makes sense to keep as current as possible i.e. upgrade sensor (for 6 months) and then upgrade to s35 Epic.

Another item you may want to add is....
Upgrade RedOne with MX sensor, wait and trade for Epic Monstro/FF35.

ps: I pray to sweet baby Jesus that Jim releases their Monstro (FF35) 6 months after s35. I suspect it'll be NAB '11 thou.

I'd like to ask about the pro I/O upgrade.. Does that apply only to stage 2 or stage 2 & 3?

Jay

Jay,

I think that you will be able to do the pro upgrade in stage 2 or 3. You would have to pay the difference in price between the standard and Pro i/o module. The price, would be $1200.00 to go Pro.

David

Hi David,

Concerning the ability to upgrade the I/O module. I really hope you are right about this. It is the only upgrade I really care about (well maybe the ability to go for the bigger monitor in Stage 3 but that is not as big an issue). No one wants to use mini XLRs for audio. They are not really up to the rigours of field work. The only comment from a semi authorised source (Brent? I think) however seemed to cast some doubt on this. I know however that Red has been flexible on this sort of thing and does listen.

check the link to jims post in this thread its fairly clear, but hed have to confirm.

5. Stage 3 RED ONE owners can upgrade their camera to M-X now and then get a 1250.00 rebate when they trade that camera back for the EPIC (effectively making the upgrade $ 4500.00) If they do not opt for EPIC they keep their RED ONE MX and forfiet any oportunity to get a deal on an EPIC.

I don't think the part about the upgrade is correct; here is what Red actually said:
Customers that upgrade their cameras and decide to enter STAGE 1 or STAGE 2 of the epic program will receive a credit back of $1250 at the time they enter either of those 2 stages.

Regarding what Tim wrote, I wonder if the credit back for the MX upgrade will be done upon entering the Stage 2 or 3 program, or if it will be credited back at the completion of the Stage 2 or Stage 3 program?

Also wondering if the second quote in his post meant the Tatoo program, which is actually Stage 1, and then the Stage 2? Wonder if the original poster got those stages confused with Stage 2 and Stage 3?

Stage 2 includes a 5" monitor
Stage 3 includes a 2.5" monitor

Stage 2 has better goodies.

The value of that RED ONE becomes $9,000 for you to go to stage 2 for it to be a wash between the two. Plus, earlier Epic etc. So, who wants to sell their executed red one for $9000? $10,000? $11,000?

Thomas,

Can you elaborate on this?

I certainly don't think that RED would agree with your labeling of the Scarlets as consumer devices, in fact I think Jim might have made a comment about this before - something along the lines of we do not and never will make a consumer camera, all of our cameras are professional film making tools.

The announcement of the H264 module also talked about streaming via wifi for on set monitoring on iphones, ipads and laptops. In fact there is a picture of the module with the antennas on top. Combine that with remote control over wifi and you have some great potential - that live video feed we all wanteed the redmote to have could be on an ipod touch or ipad right next to it or a remote control surface with live feed could be built into an app with similar apps for logging notes with live view or continuity all syncing automatically and embedding into the metadata alongside the files on camera (nothing announced so far app wise but you can see where it can go).

Good place for an update is the Red center podcast on iTunes.

Good point. All pro tools at different price points.

Changed it in the original post and added the wi-fi, etc.

Thanks,
David

Thanks for updating, good to have something in one place, hope the RED guys come in and give a more thorough rehash of your post though to make it more official but I guess they are all having a little recovery over the weekend from NAB/ Reduser party.

This could end up getting a little pedantic but Scarlet is not just one camera. It is specifically the two 2/3" models, fixed and interchangeable lens which are a couple of months behind the Epic program. There will be a Scarlet S35 model using the same MX sensor that will be in Epic S35 & Epic X just giving less high frame rate options and a few other differentials yet to be determined but mostly due to an AISIC with less processing power. When first announced I think they suggested that the S35 Scarlets would likely be the most used cameras on productions everywhere, probably because of the huge price differential between them and the Epic and the fact that most shots only call for standard frame rates.

Also has the new FLUT / color science MX Color plugin come out of Beta. I hadn't heard that yet.

I'm pretty sure the new quicktime plugin is still in Beta also.

FLUT™ is not beta from a camera standpoint. It is included in the release build for M and M-X sensors.

FLUT™ is Beta in Color (APPLE COLOR HAS NOT changed the red tab in color to enable FLUT controls but it should be in an upcoming release).

APPLE Color does recognize the NCS (represented as REDGAMMA and REDCOLOR in the RED tab within Color)

The APPLE Color Framework is BETA, but has been working well for me.

Yeah. That would be good because I think it would be nice to have a "state of Red" thread in one place. That was the idea and also to make sure the information is accurate.

If you go stage 2 wouldn't it make more sense to keep the R1 and upgrade it to MX?
