  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Great Jake, let us know what hardware will be needed to make it the "The Beast" and how well the Power Window with the 3D tracker works, along with working with DPX files. Thanks.

I see no reason, why standard Resolve software implementation wouldn't properly run on stock Mac tower with FX4800. There is enough horse power with modern GPU to do number of layers in real time. Lustre and Filmmaster does planar tracking very successfully on stock PC. What I'm really interested is the limitations of said Mac based system. I believe it is limited to 2K, but could be wrong there. I want to see their implementation of 3rd party control surfaces. Any colorist would tell you the importance of good interface for a speedy project execution. What about Red implementation? In the past Davinci relied on the background debayer. RED Rocket? Can the project files be exchanged with Linux brethren? How cool would it be, if you could prepare the project on your system and then give it to the senior colorist for proper finish? What about 3rd party plug in architecture? Anyway, I will report my observations back, unless someone beats me to it...

DPX files will require more disk speed rather than GPU acceleration so as long as you have the disk bandwidth to handle 2K DPX it should run like a dream. However, using multiple power windows and grades, filters etc can quickly slow down your systems performance. This is what I'm interested to see if they can send to the GPU.

Apple's crippled GPU performance. Horse power is not the issue. GPU support is.
 
If you really need to work in 4K in 2010, you probably do have $50,000.

For decades it is the creme de la creme now its being split up by Atari.

No offense to Black magic, we love our Ultrascopes, but for serious colorists with decades of experience... the years working as an apprentice just to fly on a Davinci .. and now its a software offering to upstarts for $1K?

Sorry guys, this is a sad day for a legend, in my humble opinion. That's technological innovation I guess.

Let's get more real, producers in Portland armed with Mark III D's in knapsacks are making Nike commercials... underbidding my friends in production as image quality seems to mean less and less.

You guys re making a lot of crazy assumptions,
1k resolve is realtime 2k, and most likely realtime red 4k. Uncompressed film scan 2k, 4k is very different than R3D's. R3Ds are an efficient codec. To use the resolve you would most likely be using DPXS or a mastering format, which is usually hard drive and CPU dependent for playback, but resolve is GPU dependent for the actual effects overlay playback. Anything LInux etc would be for film work using ARRi uncompressed 2 k, 4K data. I've sat in a few sessions of the davinci resolve, Color stole all its feature from davinci its clear as daylight.
 
Tim, you are so right. RED is as much a part of this, too. The price of admission to this business has truly gotten incredibly low and is breeding a whole different mindset in the industry...from both client perspective and future production crew perspective. It is changing VERY quickly.

It's all the yang to the ying. Incredible times, democratization of equipment, opportunities for everyone...all great, but not without it's pains. The good thing is...these young punks still don't know what they're doing, so we have that going for us, right? :-)

Apple also doesn't run an API for CUDA, so it's gonna be just Resolve talking to the card directly. What OSX does or doesn't do for Nvidia's CUDA is going to be largely immaterial.
 
They could have been the one making the announcement a-la DaVinci years ago, but like all great companies of the past (Kodak, Pogle, Ampex, RCA etc) they stubbornly refuse to change their business model until they slowly die off...

Funny enough is that they do have a 1K version for the laptop. A field version, but that might only be primaries?

They do have a HD, 2K and 4K version and they're quite close in price point if you want (new) DaVinci with their control and similar hardware etc.

It's DaVinci who's been the dinosaur until now. Although I think BM is playing it well and making it more interesting as it's a little more modular.
 
I had a good conversation with the product manager today, and it's mostly good news.

I plan to pull the trigger on this as soon as it is available.

Target date for release is July this year.

The features sets are in fact identical to the Linux system up to 2k. (obviously minus the scalability of the hardware)

It does not support REDROCKET. I had a spirited discussion on this, but they view the Apple hardware and it's lack of PCIe power and slots as the limiting factor here, which is a valid point. More on this later.

A 2.93 eight core machine was able to play back in real time at 24 fps. but it was at quarter debayer. I was told it can do so at half.

The software requires two separate graphics cards, one for gui, one for the software. Surprisingly they only support up to the 285, no Quadro 4800 fx support. I don't get that at all, but they said that more options will become available in the future.

But with two graphics cards, the required decklink card, and your raid, you're done. So Rocket support looks doubtful to me unless Apple gets off its ass, and gives us more and faster PCIe slots.

It only works with BlackMagic products right now, so your Kona wont work, but they were really clear that this was a priority and that they intend to have an open system and they understood that a lot of us are using the Kona 3

Tangent and MC color are not official supported yet (the demo was mouse driven). But this thing was just announced officially today... IMHO the panel vendors would be crazy not to support this, and the product manager said they are more than willing to help.

All in all I'm super stoked about this.

And one other good bit of news. I chatted with a couple of the folks from FXPHX today, and they are excited too. I didn't get an official confirmation that Resolve training will be available, but I walked away with the impression that it was a done deal in the very near future.

Lots of good news at NAB this year, and we aren't even to Wednesday yet.

Stephen, thanks for the short report.

What you are saying is pretty much what I was initially thinking:

Resolve on the Mac for 1K is a great substitute for Color and for many a viable option. It's great for someone who wants to colour correct films in a non-client supervised session, someone who can live without RT SDI, who knows how to grade off wide gamut LCDs using LUTs, etc...

Resolve on the Mac is not suitable for anyone who wants to build a grading suite. For this the Linux version is the answer, besides SpeedGrade, Scratch and the much more pricey Baselight and Filmmaster.

Yesterday I worked all day and night for a job on my Smoke on Mac. While this is an outstanding application and second to none for certain projects it's freshly ported to the Mac and all but bug-free. The same will apply to Resolve on the Mac. When it will be released in Summer it won't be finished and in many aspects crippled.

But from there it has a good chance to mature and develop.

In the case that you have jobs NOW, there are many alternatives out there: Color, SpeedGrade, Scratch, etc... The ROI should be in 24 months, longest.

Anyhow, I like what BM is doing there. Another player in this field will push the others!

I can see how this would bum you out. You are invested in a Quantel Pablo and I'm sure you can only imagine the writing on the wall. I would be bummed out too if I had a Scratch, Pablo or Baselight (new 95k system released at NAB) system... Heck even Speedgrade. It's only a matter of time before all these toolsets are readjusted for mass market pricing. Too many digital cinema cameras are being pushed out.
