  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED, Please Consider a Leica M Mount for DSMC System

3 high speed primes in the palm of your hand (Summilux 24mm, 35mm and 50mm f1.4)
These are the largest Leicas, double the size of the Summicrons.

DigitalFX,

great set and collection.

At the moment I left to Summicrons (that means f/2.0) because already have super fast Canon FDs 24 f/1.4, 50mm f/1.2 and 85mm f/1.2.

Probably later to get all four Summilux (that means f/1.4) ASPHERICALS, 21mm, 24mm, 25mm, 50mm,...

Roberto double click right button and save the image!

But of course, I didn't know to do this! I am just a PC noob SJ. ;)

Yea, I am having browser (Firefox) issues that my sleep deprived brain can't wrestle with today. I bet it looks sexy though. I'll get to those M (Mysterium) Vienna roofs soon enough.

Which makes me thing... how INSANE will the thread be once SJ gets his M-X ROTFLMFAO!!! HAHAH!!! Can't wait. Better get a T1 connection for that bad boy.

BTW... SJ, how come you never talk about the "Canon FDs 24 f/1.4, 50mm f/1.2 and 85mm f/1.2" you have? Are they not worthy?

Andrew,

they are all tiny (Leica M rangefinder lenses from, Leica, Zeiss, Voigtleander, Canon, Nikon, Leica SM Berthiot, Russian M lenses, etc,...),

but who cares because only image counts.

More Leica M lens tests are coming up soon in the next days and weeks.

Why?

Just because there are only three highlights at the upcoming NAB:

1. RED1-M-X 4.5K with the latest NAB Build of RCX.

2. Epic 5K working prototype.

3. New Leica Mistery Primes.

Stay tuned.

I know they are tiny (I have a Leica screw mount) but it is just funny to see it on a R1, hard to believe it has FF35 coverage. I guess we are just used to SLR and cine lenses with are massive by comparison.

I'm a second generation of Leica camera and lens user (I'm 56 years old and my father was an original Lieca III user since 1939, I have inherited all his lenses and gears and I use them on my Lieca M8/9 and very happy about it. For my Cinema-projects, I use my Zeiss Cine PL lenses for my projects and very happy about it. There are both different characteristic lenses, I really like Leica lenses for still image shooting.
I stick with cine-lens for moving picture and still lenses for still images. There are reasons.

I'm another long term Leica user (currently M only) so this would get my vote if feasible.

Leica had a lot of issues to deal with (particularly for lenses wider than 28mm) when going full-frame with the M9, due to the short flange to sensor distance on the shallow rangefinder body. Not sure what that measurement will be on Epic/Scarlet. Although M lenses are usually both optically and mechanically superb, they are of course primarily still lenses.

Carl Zeiss did Zeiss Cine Compact Primes Set that are actually rehoused Cosina Zeiss still lenses.

For my point of view one of the best combinations is to use lightweight Angenieux Optimo zooms (when you need zoom telephoto) and Leica M stills (when you need primes)

if you are looking to get something very original look and eye compelling quality of image details.

RED1 is already DSMC System and Leica M lenses perfectly fit to that modular concept.

Also R1 M-X sensor supposed to be much better than in Leica M8/M9 cameras so that means you'll get exceptional value

and can't find with any other still or even cine digital system today or tomorrow.

I agree Sanjin that it would be great to be able to use such fine lenses on Scarlet/Epic. Until FF35 comes along there will still be the crop factor to consider, but since you've been using M lenses on your R1 I guess you're used to that.

Many people report getting excellent results using them on the G1/GH1, although again there are some problems with the wide angles on the small 4/3rds sensor (2x crop also turns even an 18mm into a 36). The S35 with its (approx.) APS-H 1.3 crop should be better in this respect (similar to using the lenses on the 1.3 crop M8).

RED's modern CMOS sensor should compare well to the 4yr old tech. leica/Kodak CCD, although Leica doesn't use AA and uses little internal processing (compared to most DSLR's) on its RAW files.

George,

don't forget that Carl Zeiss and Schneider-Kreuznach lenses for Arriflex 35 II Family

were also very tiny glass almost at the same size as Leica M rangefinder lenses.

He has used a IIC to some extent on every one of his films since.

I'm pretty sure some company will make other lens mounts for Epic and Scarlet, and one of them will be for Leica M . . . .

Since they are designed as removable, there can't be a way for Red to control it or know what was used, right? So they might as well make their own and turn the profit themselves, if it is worth the R&D. Red team?

What I am curious about is how their mechanics feel once fitted with a large gear to increase barrel diameter, and using a top notch FF. I think that is the real question here, for Cinema use. Wouldn't you guys agree?
