I hope that Red considers a Leica M mount for the Scarlet. The benefits include very small, sharp and fast glass. The lenses themselves are only a little larger than the miniprimes but will cover FF35. I'm sure this has been discussed before but I wanted to see how many people would be interested in such a mount. I remember there was some reason why an M mount would not work on the original red but I do not remember why. Currently, there are three companies that make excellent glass for the M, Leica (crazy expensive, but less than PL mounts), Zeiss (less expensive) and Voigtländer (least expensive). Since there is no mechanical shutter or mirror to deal with, it should be pretty easy to make a dumb M Mount. Hell, they even make them for the Panasonic GH1. What are your thoughts? Red Team: is there some mounting problem that I am not aware of that will make such a mount impossible?

Yeah an M mount for epic would be ideal in some lightweight scenarios, I am still trying to find a way to mount one to my RED without voiding warranty.

It would be great to be able to rent some Leicas for stills, or even try them out with a very nice follow focus for 5k motion, though probably scary for FF35. :)

What's the deal with the Zeiss M-Mounts? Are they the same glass as ZF/Compact Primes, or a completely different thing?

No doubt, there are tons of lenses. I have been shooting Leica since 1979 and have quite a few vintage lenses in addition to the modern lenses I own. I would buy a personal Scarlet specifically for my lenses. Some of the vintage lenses are my favorite.

Dont forget all the screw mounts too...all they need is a inexpensive M adapter.

They are designed for the Zeiss Ikon which many pro photographers feel is mechanically every bit as good as the Leica m7, it just does not have the Leica prestige, still, all the Zeiss/Leica/Voight lenses are interchangable so we have a lot of options if Red decides to build a mount. The voight's are actually a steal and should be banned because they are sooo good and soo cheap compared to the Leica lenses (not as good but 95% for 1/4 the price).

Jim, please make this happen, I know you are a Leica fan and with all the beautiful M glass out there, the Scarlet will be even better. Many photographers are picking up Lumix GH1's just to use M glass without having to buy a Leica body so I'm sure the Leica mount will be popular with Scarlet users. I know the lenses seem expensive for photo lenses but if you get used ones, you can keep the costs down.

They look so tiny! :)

Thanks for the answer Andrew. I wish I could get to play with any of these.

I guess I was thinking "man, I wish they had miniprimes for S35", I love the pro primes but man they are big and heavy. These lenses would be perfect for car rigs, monopods, body mounted cameras, underwater work ect.

Sanjin, that lens is so tiny on the R1, I have a feeling they will look a little more normal on the DSMC system.

Andrew,

they are all tiny (Leica M rangefinder lenses from, Leica, Zeiss, Voigtleander, Canon, Nikon, Leica SM Berthiot, Russian M lenses, etc,...),

but who cares because only image counts.

More Leica M lens tests are coming up soon in the next days and weeks.

Why?

Just because there are only three highlights at the upcoming NAB:

1. RED1-M-X 4.5K with the latest NAB Build of RCX.

2. Epic 5K working prototype.

3. New Leica Mistery Primes.

Stay tuned.

These are the largest Leicas, double the size of the Summicrons.

Hey SJ, I can't downloads those Tiffs... help. I want that roof, now! Thank you BTW. :D

Digital, I hate you. If you were here next to me I'd kick you in the shin. <3

Andrew, I can see the benefit of small and light too. But I don't think that is the absolute selling point. I am thinking of panchros, or other superior still lenses be it ZFs, Canons, or Nikons. Those are plenty small enough. I think what we are all after is the Leica/Primo look/quality here. I like the MP/RPP look, but the more I learn about cinematography I think I am becoming partial to Cookes and Primos... so that is what I am looking for. The Leica look. 5i's look mighty sexxxey though. :D

I can only accept the existence of 5 particular sets of lenses now, each with their own benefits:
RPP's, 4i's, 5i's, "leica PL something or other's", and some sort of M mount flavor.

Thanks to all of you who are patient enough to put up with me, and keep teaching me and everyone else that reads RedUser (whether they be as loud and obnoxious as moi, or not) about the fine flavors of glass.

Guys,

each lens has lateral aberrations as usual.

Leica did one of the best jobs in a field of FF35mm together with Canon FD, Nikon F and Zeiss to reduce those aberrations.

Also everything that's important is officially published about Leica's Lab tests online.
